Which FREE forum software is the easiest to mod? for that matter, what's the best FREE forum software in your opinion? thx to anyone that can help!

phpBB is my choice too. The tpl files are a blessing. With some time on your hands you can really come up with something really nice ...

Wow, I can't believe that the first and only two people said phpBB.

SMF is by FAR the easiest free forum software to modify. You can do just about everything you need directly from the admin panel - whereas with phpBB, everything has to be done with the files themselves.

If you havent committed yourself to phpBB already, I strongly suggest checking out SMF...ease of modification is really only one of many reasons I would choose to go with it.

Right, that's not even something I mentioned...Not only is SMF easier to modify, but it comes with a lot of features that phpBB does not - features that you would have to modify phpBB to have.

vBulletin is the best and easiest paid forum software to mod, by far.

But if you want free, I'd go phpBB.
I agree SMF is an excellent forum, but there are limited mods available yet so unless you can develop your own, stick with phpBB

someone knows if phpbb has a mod that works like the bank system here? (I mean money could be trade within member/member bank/member through Paypal)

I asked this feature at SMF but it is just planned,since actualy Daniel, the developer, is engaged with school.
So a ready free alternative to vbuletin with this feature implemented, would be great.

I think the mod is called the cash mod. haven't tried it yet though, I will try it as soon as possible.

also i forgot to add, it's easiest to "hack" as well, so be very careful downloading mods that are not yet officially verified by phpbb admins and always download and install the latest patch/versions of it. or your forum might end up redirected to a terrorist site. :imho: that's my bad experience with it.

yup 3 times. twice on godaddy because someone is very angry with godaddy and mass hacked every phpbb hosted on it, though i can't show a proof but someone advised me that and an email i received from the hacker as well to remove phpbb hosted on godaddy or else he will hack it so i complied lol
