I don't thats why I said .in was more popular (worldwide) but I do know .co.in is quite popular aswell, but I was going by .in total reg amounts since 2005 when they lifted the regulations on registering a .in/.co.in domains.

It seems that if you look at the forums, it seems that people prefer investing in .in instead of .co.in although .co.in is more popular in India.

.in is a favorite among domainers. Since it is short perhaps. Moreover .in domain registrations far exceed .co.in registrations. Here, i would like to point out that NNN.in and LLL.in (Premium letters) already have a reasonable resale value while NNN.co.in and LLL.co.in (Premium letters) are yet to be registered completely.

.co.in domains tend to get more traffic than .in domains and are popular in India.

Therefore, it would be better to register both .in and .co.in. Further, if you don't find the .in available register the .co.in. Remember that the quality of the keyword and its relevance to Indians and Indian Laws should also be taken into consideration before registration.

I recommend to stay away from Adult domains in both these extensions.

So who is going to register all the available NNN.co.in domains looks like a good investment.

The problem here is that Western domainers are trying to drive the .IN domain whereas Indians are putting their money into the .CO.IN domain.

This was my understanding as well. .in will take over in popularity I think, though it may take several years yet.

A good way to go if you're looking to flip. If you're looking for long-term investments, I would go with .in.

I don't know any popular website started in the last 2 years with .co.in instead of .in. Google.co.in, msn.co.in were older websites. But not many Indian companies will pay large amounts for any good domain name , they will prefer alternate names at reg fee.

If you are going to have a useful website where people will type in the domain name to visit again, why make them type an extra .co.in, chances of spelling mistakes are higher.

Still my .co.in domains receive good traffic than my .in's.

if you target india then it looks like .co.in is the way to go but if you want to use the .in as a global domain like I & many others do then use the .in, it sounds cool... two sites for examples to the above where I make good use of this tld as global sites are www.Falling.in/Love (parked) & www.Rachel.in (womens designer fashion labels)
