I would like to clarify my statements in my previous post

Moreover, over 80-90% of the .in names are with domainers, whereas only 40-50% of the .co.in are with domainers.
This is because more .in domains are registered compared to .co.in domains.
(End users most likely have registered both .in & .co.in)

Most new sites in India still prefers Hinglish (Hindi+English or Hindi words written in English) keyword.
Meant to say prefer ".com's in Hinglish "

I am not saying people do not know .in, but people are more familiar with .co.in .
I personally would register both, if available.
I agree that more .in are registered than .co.in that's because .in is more popular with international domainer.
Moreover, .in can be registered at enom and godaddy but .co.in can't be registered there.

Here are some facts to substantiate my claim about the popularity of .co.in .
Check Government of India's Advertisement.

They seems to be confused about the branding.

Take any .co.in which has active acedemic .ac.in site, it would receive type-in/typo traffic but the same may not true with the .in domain.

I have compared notes with the owner of mobile.in , realestate.in and other commercial keyword owner and found that .co.in receives 8-10 times more traffic. (although the traffic overall is not substantial).

Here is a recent press release from Reuters about their India launch
http://us.indiantelevision.com/headlines/y2k7/sep/sep164.php
(They have registered both .co.in & .in but used .co.in in their press release).

Hutch.in is now Vodafone.in - this is today.

I rest my case...if there ever was one.

I like your set a2zofb2b... ads etc. But they seriously need a design overhaul. Cheers.

This has been an ongoing debate since Feb 05. I was always adviced to invest in both extensions and grab both when registering a name, and so i do.

The problem with getting both is that when renewal time comes around that will be a lot of money. That may not be a problem for some, but for me it is. I registered 150 .in domains as a long-term investment. The renewal fees will be a burden, but I believe it will pay off. But to pay 300 renewal fees would be too much.

Furthermore, I don't believe that .co.in has a future in the long run. When two extensions are in direct competition, and one is shorter and easier to remember and type, the outcome is obvious. Sure co.in may stick around but it will be the "little brother" for those who can't afford .in.

The renewal fees as of now actually favor .co.in purchasing and development. $13/year for domain names(.in in this case) is not cheap, and i think that strain will make people give .co.in more than a fair chance. Its already used for many big websites, so its already got momentum. I personally bought more .co.ins because i know i will be more willing to renew a name at ~$8/year than $13, and since this is a bit of a mid/long term speculation, the lower renewal fees keep me with .co.ins.

I agree that to buy both co.in and .in is the best option. If you were purchasing a year or two ago that was an easier thing to do, nowadays someone else usually has one of the pair.

The vast majority of my offers have been for my .in's. Some of these may have been from other domainers but where I have been dealing with end users, without exception, they have been multinationals seeking a brandable keyword. These international corporates see India as the huge potential honeypot that it is, these multinationals know how to leverage the internet and they will do what they can to drive usage.

I've been managing a website in India for 3 years now, i've hired people in India and worked hard to create revenue online from the India market - it's very very hard work and its harder to make any money from the India online market. My experience tells me that even though 'we' from outside India will push the internet as a revenue stream India is not yet in a place that we can make the most of their engagement in it. That will change, and hopefully better, affordable, reliable internet access will drive that but it is going to take more time - the rewards, I believe, will go to those who held onto their good domains and painfully paid the yearly renewal. Three years ago I gave the india domain market 3-5 years to take off, I still give it 3-5 years.

It`s a real mess and I keep saying it from more than 1 year.

The internet in India is growing very strong but no one can say for sure what Indians will prefer in the future.

AOL just launched AOL.in this year.

More and more countries worldwide leave the third level for the second level.

Lately happened for:

.fr (France) , .pk (Pakistan)

and rumours about the Australian .com.au towards the .au are getting stronger.

I think , with time , even in India they will prefer .in

co.in is the king now, but the future is .in... iam sure !

I have to agree. Over the last six months, I have seen much more significant increases in my .in traffic compared to my .co.in. Also, no end user inquiries for my .co.in, while I have received several for my .in.

It's the same situation in China, previously the majority domain names use the extension of com.cn, but now cn already takes the lead.

In September I registered WAG.co.in......Are there still LLL.co.in names available or have they all been registered. When I search directly for WAG.IN it says "The website declined to show this webpage"
