I was quite surprised to find that AFNIC were supportive when i called them re suspected fast tracking...I expected them to just tell me to go off and register domains as soon as I'd thought of them instead of whinging (however my case was a bit different in that my order for the domain appeared to go through and then was cancelled due to a 'technical problem'. 1and1 was the site i used )

I don't know if it waill help anyone, but AFNIC told me they are encouraging people to report fast tracking in France to https://internet-signalement.gouv.fr/

I don't know if they will be as helpful, but you never know. Just one thng, can anyone tell me the French for 'fast tracking'...I have not lived here that long!

Did you ever contact 1&1 about the domain?

Also, what was the domain? was it a drop or something that someone else would have been trying to register?

Hi

It was a three word, long-winded absolutely obscure name. I have the .com and still plan to use it. I fail to see how someone could have thought of it just 2 days after my search. AFNIC confirmed there was genuinely a technical problem at their end that meant two people were allowed to reg the same name, cos the other guy reg'd it first, he got it and my registration was cancelled. So simply a case of fast tracking.

I've had annoyances with afnic in the past because of the way they handle expired names. When you check for avail after the name has been dropped it will show as being available, but you won't be able to register it for a number of days.

So, if it was a drop it's possible that it would show as being available at the registrar because of afnic's (backward) system. Then when you actually went to buy the name, the registrar would have given you a success response because the initial check showed available, but ultimately would have received an error message from afnic stating that the name was registered, specifically if they were using the email ticketing system to register the name.

If someone was following it through the drop process and registered it when it actually became available to publicly register, (7 days after expire) you might have been simply been beaten to the punch by someone who had the timing correct.

I really don't think it was front running, 1&1 wouldn't tempt afnic with something like that, it's too dangerous.
