Hello NPers,

i want this thread to serve as a learning curve for most newbies.

Consider the years and months you have spent in the domaining business, what will you do differently to rise up the ladder if you were starting all over again?

Start working when I was 6 and invest in microsoft pre-IPO.

Then I'd take some of my money and register every popular single word .com when they first became available.

I'd probably time-travel back in time, and register all kumquat related domains, and control that niche like a true pioneer.

unless you'd still know, all you know today

going back and doing over, you'd end up in same place you are now

:)

or....maybe worst, because there is more competition than before

Probably wouldn't reg domains while intoxicated. I could teach a college level course on that subject.

I started late, so there's not much I could've done anyway. Anyway I would've not bought some crappy domains (including LLLLs) that I did. Overall, my experience is not that bad.

I remember a couple of your posts on this (he's not kidding)

Esteemed member Fonzie answered this question in the past, that now there are other more profitable avenues for a smart person than today's domaining (starting from zero).

But if your just starting. Stay away from the new extensions. They can kill your virgin domainer bankroll

I though extension age was meaningless .....but I agree after thinking about it..

.net/.org/.com = milf/cougar pays their own way....
.us = barely legal and take a lot of patience and are quite fickle...
.me/.biz = check their id, some lipstick makes them look old enough...can get you into trouble
.ninja = the cp of domaining

Apologies for the sexist nature of this post.. I could switch genders to make it pc.

Not listen to the bullshit domainers told me :)

The, "only buy .com" etc... etc.... Funny my first BIG sale was a .info....

I wouldn't have wasted time trying to hand reg a lot of names & focussed on buying quality names in the aftermarket instead.

As htmlindex says i also wasted a bit of time hand registering a bunch of, in my case, pretty crappy "brandables" when I first started out. It's better to have a small portfolio of decent names than a large number of mediocre or bad names. My renewal fees are now at $3k per year which i think is more than enough.

I've made a bit of a gamble on LLL.co lately and now own about 50 of them. They are expensive to renew so hopefully there's demand for them. It's too early to tell if they've been a good or bad investment. .Co is pretty much the only TLD beside .com that i like personally.

When I was six I was making the girls cry.....

I'm still making the girls cry.... and you'll have to look in my profile to see how old I am :)

But to answer the OP. I'd do a lot more research, buy much less domains, and pay more for every domain I buy. I've at least started to do the last two because now there is so much competition on GoDaddy auctions :( Oh, and I wouldn't concentrate on domainers domains :)

Great question! Great thread!

I don't think I would do anything differently. I registered hundreds of names in 2000 on speculation. Sold some but made a loss overall. That's the nature of speculation though, it's a gamble. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't.

I remember at the time WAP phones were just coming on the market and I registered a stack of WAP names. WAP phones never took off so I never sold any of them.

I would have read up and experimented a lot more. A lot of expensive lessons for me back then.

Oh yeah, and don't drink and register. And never purchase domains based on gut feeling. Do some research first. Lots and lots of free tool available to research domains.

If you google "Free Domain Tools to Research Domains and Websites" you'll see a list I made.
