Hi,
I am very new to domaining and realize that these questions have probably been asked a million times before, and for that I apologize. I have searched the forums but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.
I have been dabbling with buying a few domains over the past few months but obviously being new to this am not so sure if my selection criteria for domains are the right way to approach it.
My selection criteria have been:
• .com domains only for now. (Except for the few .me ones i bought with intent to use) I know what everyone has been saying that .me domains are speculative etc. Well I didn’t spend large amounts on these ,.me domains. Nor do I expect to make a lot of money out of them.
• No domains with hyphens
• No more than 10 characters (Unless it is really good) but I want short and sweet domain names
• Limited to 2 word domains
• Pronounceable domains
• Catchy sound to it
• Words that flow together. Avoid random word combination's that don’t make any sense
• Avoid typos
• And most certainly not anything trademarked or any cyber squatting.
I have gone in with the approach that I will mainly buy domains that should I not be able to sell it, it would be useful to develop a site with - 3 of which I am currently developing sites on, of personal interests.
A couple of questions I have.
1. What is the best source for finding valuable domains?
Am I correct in saying that 99% of .com domains that are available to register probably hold very little value. So if the domain cost $7 to register. One would be lucky to get between $50 - $100 reselling it? Correct me if Im wrong. I have bought a few of these, but specifically to develop.
Then there are expiring domains. I have been monitoring them on pool.com and have even attempted to buy some of the good ones, but all of them have gone into auctions that I haven’t bothered bidding on.
Then there are the domain sales sites such as tdnam, sedo and afternic. I bought 1 off afternic. But that was one I wanted to develop.
So I guess what I am asking is......is it better to pick up a couple of domains in auctions or sales for a few hundred dollars. Or try and pickup expired domains or non registered domains for the standard reg fee. I would imagine that majority of really valuable domains would not ever get to the stage that they expire and are deleted. As the owners would hopefully be awake enough to renew them.
2. How important is the keyword in the domain?
I have noticed that every 2 word combination with the words “mortgage” “travel” “insure” “finance” “bank” “credit” etc are all registered. Sometimes even very stupid sounding combination's, as well as ridiculously long domains with probably over 20 or 30 chars. Do these really hold much value. Much more value than a domain that is short and sweet, sounds catchy but doesn’t have any of the high paying keywords in?
I did say a couple of questions…..so I'm going to end this post off here before you get bored and stop reading :D
It just amazes me what junk domains some people register out there and attempt to sell. And I really don't want to be one of those people, I want to be knowledgeable and smart in buying domains so I don't end up with a pile of worthless garbage domains.
I would really appreciate you opinions.
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Brad
