What Makes A Domain Name Valuable?

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what really makes a domain name valuable, especially in places like Sedo and Afternic. I have sold names on Ebay, so I know what works there, but selling domains in other places seems to be a little different. Is traffic all that matters?

That's the million dollar question, and everyone has their opinions on it!.

Some would say traffic, some would say the keyword, some would say the length....your best bet would be to do a search on NP's here, there's a wealth of information & threads on this topic, there's no clear answer to be frankly honest!.

Traffic obviously helps a lot, but in my opinion the "sound" of the name is what matters the most. By that I mean if you heard it on a radio commercial, would you remember it? Would you be able to spell it? Does it make sense? If you can answer yes to those 3 questions it is probably a pretty valuable name, even if it is long.

TLD Domains with one word are very valuable.

In addition, domains that equal keyphrases for popular exact searches. For example, the any domain with the words "home business" alone would be valuable because many people are looking for "home business" by itself with no extra words added (an exact search).

Usually common one word .com domains are worth more as they get plenty of type in traffic and easy to remember. Then domain names that match or contain targeted keywords are more valuable than those that don't.

Domain name value depends on various aspects such as

1) Domain name attraction
2) Domain name length (in my opinion it should be less than 7)
3) Market availability eg: cars, hotels etc
4) Of course a common TLD ( .com is more preferable)
5) Search engine friendly (should meet maximum global search)
6) easy to pronounce
7) A valuable domain must be easy to remember

How do I find out what keywords are targeted the most. Does it cost to do this?
