What is going on with the .info extension?

Hi guys I have been away from domaining for a while I own several premium .info domains, can someone please update me what the current .info market is doing? I hear it is in a slump :[ Which I do not understand considering last year reported xxx,xxx sales highest .info has seen yet?!

Have a look at these stats at: http://www.domaintools.com/internet-statistics/

.com represents about 75% of all active domains while .info comes in 4th place with about 5%

These stats as you can see don´t show foreign TLDs like .de (Germany) or .co.uk (United Kingdom) which I believe have more domains worldwide than .info

Really I don't like the .inf if you want to create a trademark or a brand name, if you are going to create small sites, yes it is a good option

I love infos, but I agree with you on that tm, brandable etc infos dont work well with the info extension. All depends on the keyword IMO. Infos are great for travel, geo etc, i.e. what end users want/need info on.

Yes!

Here in New York the Transit Authority that operates the bus and subway service uses MTA.info as their domain name.

If you go to Google and type in just the letters MTA...

you will see that...

MTA.info is the first and second result.

And you will see there are many entities using the MTA acronym
but the .INFO is FIRST and SECOND!

For a while, I had been tracking some early .INFO "reported sales" for some time, and noted that several of the reported ones never updated Whois information, or went on to become stand-alone, content-rich .INFO websites, IMHO. You'll recall, I'm sure, that there was a lot of HYPE surrounding the launch and early days of the .INFO, I'm sure.

Anyway, yes, I agree that it's presently in a malaise ... and I've sold or partnered - or dropped - all but a few of my .INFO's!

I personaly like the .INFO´s, it´s just a shame that it´s in a malaise to quote your words. I would like to see it in second place after .com. After all isn´t the web a massive library of INFOrmation?

I think .info is making steady progress value wise. Free.info sold for $42,000 in Nov 07 and Travel.info sold for $116,000 earlier in 07. USimmigration.info is listed as having sold for $5,560 in Jan 08.

I bought Savings.info today to add to my other .info domains like Prices.info, Rates.info, Tariffs.info and Premiums.info. All 5 of these .infos made it to the preliminary list for Domainfest Hollywood 08. I think this included about 120 .infos out of 2,000 domains. I didn't list my .infos because I couldn't agree on a reserve prices with SnapNames.

My .info investing strategy has been to buy financial keywords that alot of people want comparison style information on, where having provided that information you might be able to sell something commercially valuable, and where that sale can be made online.

I think the knack with .info is to realise keyword value doesn't work like .com as other people here have pointed out. Blue.com is worth millions of dollars but Blue.info has limited value because people don't want information on blue and you aren't going to sell anything having provided that information.

i think it has some of the qualities you mentioned, vis a vis price comparison shoppers etc., so the value might be good. But man, that's a lot of money.

:imho: travel dot TLD should be the judge of that TLD's value. It seems to always top the sales in every TLD. If travel.info sold for over 100K then .info is doing great. Try to get 100K for travel.cc! Get my point?

Laptops.info is an excellent .info. Laptops are continually getting upgraded and replaced so people will want want new information frequently, they aren't cheap so there is value in pushing potential buyers to the sites selling the laptops, they are likely to be around in some form or another for many years to come so it's a safe long term investment, this is important, I usually avoid technologies in alternative extensions because by the time the extension becomes better known and more valuable, the technology may have changed or evolved. For example, HTML.info would have been worth more in 2002 than in 2008 in my view because now you have XHTML, DHTML, CSS, etc undermining the uniqueness of the keyword. My only other comment about the keyword laptop, is don't people in the US use the word notebook? Keyword dilution cuts your potential market down and I'm cautious about buying non US-English words because on the whole domain value is driven by US sales and keyword statistics.

Price wise, it's a difficult call. The best .infos are held by domainers who had the foresight to apply through the Landrush lottery allocation process, the more applications they made across registrars the more premium .infos they picked up. The trick is gauge how many .infos a seller holds. The more they hold, the better price they will offer because they've got rereg costs and tend to be more pragmatic about where .info fits into the domain extension pecking order, if they only hold a few premium .infos and are relatively new to domaining, they will probably want alot more money and be prepared to wait for it, so I try to avoid buying from these holders.

My only other comment about the keyword laptop, is don't people in the US use the word notebook?

I'm in the US and although I have heard them called notebooks (usually by the actual manufacturer - like Dell) I have always known them as Laptops. Just my experience, I can't speak for the other 299,999,999 Americans.
