As a mildly competent domainer I see no true value in the .info extension. While I love seeing them sell I never see them put to much good use. I don't see many end users loving the extension and on the namepros forum as of late, I've seen several HUGE bulk sales of many solid .info names.

I guess what I'm wondering is what others think of the extensions. It seems to be an extension not quite as bad as .name but seemly useless to the end user. Do you think so or what are your thoughts?

I have been thinking seriously about building a dot info directory (only developed .info sites need apply). This thread may just get me to go ahead and buy a name and lay out the 25 bucks for a copy of phpLD.

Did anyone ever noticed if you searched for domains on WildWestDomains / that the .info was just next to the .com and before the .net? It really upset me that WWD was trying so hard to push them and now it seems they are doing the same with the .us.

Daniel, this is primarily due to GoDaddy's profit margin. Bottom line, they make more money on .info and .us then they do on com, net, and org. So, they are pushing the product that makes them the most cash. Nothing other than that.

In regards to the .info extension, I believe it has promise in some uses. I happen to like it, and own a few decent keyword .info's - This helps in a few regards, some with SERP results if you put a site up on them, but primarily .info is a TLD that has the potential to be a force in the future. Its going to take some solid .info sites in the publics eye to give this TLD a spark. If that happens - I think this TLD could be up with the likes of .net and .org

I have a large portfolio of .info domains, I'll let these recent sales speak for themselves. I had a couple more in the sub-$250 range that aren't listed here. That's over $4,000 in sales in about a months time. If your names are good and prices are reasonable, the market is there. It was a bit more than usual for info, but I think an indication of things to come. I'm actually considering raising some of my prices thinking I might have them priced to cheap on the buy now options.

5/23/07 - Microscopes.info - $800
5/29/07 - FishKeeping.info - $250
6/06/07 - Guarantees.info - $695
6/10/07 - Markdowns.info - $395
6/10/07 - Markdown.info - $295
6/10/07 - TaxSaving.info - $395
6/21/07 - Storefront.info - $1,500

I hope resellers weren't buying them for that amount of money....

Actually, I hope they were. Strong generic names sell for those prices to resellers on snapnames and pool fairly regularly. Sales under $1,000 just don't get the publicity very often. I've paid as much as $500 myself for info domains for resale, and sold them for double or more.

I understand some domains but as you might have already seen by the post I'm not too keen on the .info's.

Especially these two... I don't see much in them: 5/29/07 - FishKeeping.info - $250
6/06/07 - Guarantees.info - $695

The last 5 of those were all me. Guarantees.info and markdowns.info fitted my buying cycle .info strategy. I prefer the plural but bought markdown.info because it was cheap. I would have preferred taxsavings.info to the singular but that was already developed. I doubt theparamount or many others would approve but over the last few months I paid $10,000 for rates.info, $12,000 for prices.info, $1,500 for tariffs.info, $1,800 for vouchers.info, and $2,300 for refunds.info. I wanted a company name to hold them all and convey what I plan to do. The domain had to be a .info for consistency. I narrowed it down to shopwindow.info (UK phrase for storefront) and storefront.info. I made an offer for shopwindow.info on Sedo but the owner wanted 25,000 Euros so that settled it. The .com, .net, and .org of storefront are all developed which is unusual with a generic name but it's a flexible word. Other .info domains I have bought recently include taxrates.info for $750, stockprices.info for $500, and words.info for $5,200. That last one doesn't fit with the rest of my .infos but as Winston Churchill said "Words are the only things which last forever" so I'm sure I will think of something to do with it.

fishkeeping.info is useful. Do you know how many people buy a house and inherit a pond with fish in it but haven't got a clue how to look after them? I spent hours searching the Internet for information on looking after fish when I bought a house earlier this year. You've only got to sell 100 books on keeping fish or 25 water testing kits to cover the cost of that domain.

I do own a few select .info domain names and think they do have a place in the domain world as informational websites are actually quite popular and are best used with .info domains. Also, I just sold bracelet.name for $800, so just because someone else doesn't like it, doesn't mean you can't make a little change from it. Better ones are left for everyone else.

Your investing alot of money into the .info... hopefully it will pay off for you. Spending 25k+ on domains is not in my best interest right now so i'll leave that to you.

There are lots of us who love .info, including myself. I tend to buy them almost exclusively due to the fact I tend to develop informational sites and they seem to work well in that respect. Don't forget the word "info" is also a keyword so many .info's will have OVT with extension for that reason.
+1

I love .info, and have many that I'll be developing soon.

Just one example: http://webhosting.info/

There are plenty of nice .info sites around ;)

.info usage/acceptance is not equal all over the world. In quite a few countries .info is the largest gTLD outside .com . In a handful of countries there are more .info's than .com's registered :D

I also have topsite.info in a sedo auction now, and had an offer of $450 for MemorialDay.info which I didn't accept.

Info is active with sales for good generic domains, but the average price is probably under $800, so it doesn't get much publicity...yet.

I think when people are calling for new gTLDs they don't realise just how long it takes to become established. It just doesn't happen overnight you are looking at 5 - 10 years minimum to get into the public consciousness.

And problem for each new arrival is it gets harder and harder as the number of people willing to take the risk get spread wider and wider.

ICANN need to be very careful because if they introduce too many people will play safe and simply go with the established players.

I will agree there aren't any of great popularity that have become household names, but there are tons of real .info sites. If you look at this link

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=+site:.info&btnG=Search

You'll see by browsing that there are a large quantity that are not English language sites.
