For those wondering whether to invest, here are 10 reasons why .info is a wise choice....

1. info is a keyword which makes it great for SEO. If you consider people searching for golf, you have a good number of people searching for "golf info" but no-one would ever consider looking for "golf net", "golf org" or "golf biz".

2. Its still possible to pick up great domains. While .com, .net and .org and covered by the large firms who make it impossible for small fry to pick up valuable dropping domains, there are still .info gems that can still be caught by people like you and me. In the last month, we've picked up major cities and lakes in the state of Georgia including www.lakelanier.info and www.johnscreek.info.

3. They cost about 80 cents! What else can you buy now thats of any value for less than a dollar? You can get 8 .infos for the price of 1 .com.

4. There are major info domains in use, often in the area of tourism, for which its perfectly suited. Try www.Spain.info, www.Peru.info, www.Norway.info, www.Germany.info, www.Austria.info, www.Amsterdam.info, www.Cancun.info, www.Bratislava.info and many, many more. (Thanks to Binyin for many of these)

5. The extension is perfect for history and education sites. Whereas .com, .net, .org, .biz and the others have been shoehorned into use for general information sites, nothing fits as perfectly as .info. See www.webhosting.info, www.chomsky.info, www.pinyin.info and www.watergate.info for starters.
(Thanks to BuysDomains for this list)

6. It works in multiple languages. Every major Western European language has a word beginning with "info..." that mean "information".

7. Its a global extension. Unlike a .us, .co.uk or .de, a .info domain can brand your site worldwide.

8. It can complement a company's main site. Quite a lot of companies are now using their .com to serve as their main selling platform and .info as the main resource for stock market and investor information.

9. .info led the way in International Domain Names. Long before .com and .net allowed people to register domains in more than just the Roman Alphabet, .infos could be registered in multiple Scandanavian, East European and Asian languages.

10. Did I mention they cost 80 cents? Ok ... reason #10 is that .info is actually used more than the other TLDs that were introduced at the same time in 2001. Where as .biz, .aero, .coop and other disasters have fallen by the wayside, info is still going strong with 1.6 million domains in use according to Wikipedia. Thats pretty good when you consider that 70% of .com domains registered every year never get used.

11. Ok - we'll have a #11 as a bonus. They are starting to sell well too! 2007 saw sales such as www.NewYork.info for $46,392, www.Credit.info for $36,000, www.Casino.info for $35,127 and www.Camping.info for $28,100.

Thanks guys - lets hope .info stays out of the clutches of the dropcatchers for a while longer. I know there are some picking up the grade A+ domains but the vast majority still drop where we can catch them

Interesting reading. At the moment I'm stuck not knowing whether to buy a .info for a few thousand.

I found your post optimistic until point 10.
1.6million in use - I'm not too sure about that. But the main thing that point 10. made me think about was the comparison between 1.6m .info's in use, and 70% of .com's registered each year not even used...

...isn't that apples and oranges? It just made me think about the percentage of .info's that have been registered but aren't being used. I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than 70% (especially with them being soo cheap, and free at one point).

I'm still fairly new to this game and so don't know all there is to know. I'm just going back and forth on whether to pay a few grand for a .info, when there are other opportunities.

I do like the sound of the .info and the idea of it. There just needs to be more info's developed. I can only think of 1 .info that I have ever visited. Haven't .info's been around over 5 years now? but where are they all? That's what puts me off...

Just my thoughts, no offense meant.

IDN .info are also available, I forget the languages, but they are for latin character sets like Spanish, Dutch, French, etc. So if you are looking for some City names, or countries, check out .info in IDNs... there are some languages still available [I checked like 1 month ago? Might be scooped up already]

well you really should look at WHY something is becoming popular. if the reasons arent warranted and you're in it for the long haul, you're scr_wed.

btw .info stands for "information".

Nicely put!

We purchased names like academicbooks.info (closing at Sedo in 48hrs, so far 1 bid of 60 Euros), getbasic.info and accesscapital.info for our fundraising activities.

So far .info domains raised more than .coms like mostcapable, 4professional and expressmade. Let's hope your points are right - we need about ยฃ210k before April!
