Honestly, I don't put a character or image to php niether do I put it for any other typing of coding. Php to me is a language of words and symbols not of graphical images. But if I had to pick, I would have to say... the mysql symbol.

<?php is used to separate languages and is ignored in runtime i think, but <? works just fine

The unofficial mascot for PHP is an elephant.

There is talk amongst the PHP higher-ups to make the elephant official. This may conflict however with the elephant mascot of PostgreSQL .

For some reason the elephant is especially popular with French developers
