Hey everyone,
I’ve been dipping into domain investing lately and I’m curious how seasoned domainers are valuing domain names in today’s market. The domain space is always evolving, and what worked 5 years ago might not hold as well now.
Here are some of the factors I personally consider but I’m eager to see what you prioritize:
  • Length & Memorability shorter, easier to spell domains always have an edge
  • Topical / Niche Relevance how well does it match a trending niche (AI, crypto, health, etc.)
  • TLD / Extension .com, .io, .co, other newer ones
  • Trademark / Legal Risk whether it can infringe on existing brands
  • SEO Potential / Keywords presence of high-value keywords
  • Past Traffic / History whether it previously had traffic, backlinks, penalty history
  • Market Demand & Comparable Sales what similar domains have sold for recently
  • Brand ability / Pronunciation how easily it can be branded
So here are a few questions:
  1. Which factor do you give most weight to these days, and why?
  2. Do TLDs beyond .com (like .io, .ai, etc.) still carry strong value, or are people sticking strictly to .com?
  3. How do you assess legal risk do you run trademark checks always, or only for domains you seriously consider reselling?
  4. Any tools or data sources you swear by for doing domain appraisals / comps in your workflows?
Looking forward to hearing your methods, success stories, or even mistakes you’ve learned from.

Only buy names and domain extensions that are proven to be desirable by organizations.

Everything else is just a simplified version of trying to do that in a methodical way with more exceptions than the English language.

Hi

valuation method same as last year

one should be able to look at a domain and figure whether it has value now and/ or in the future.

metrics, are for those who can’t do that yet

imo….

I ask myself this: if I don’t sell this domain, would I actually develop it? Can I build something on it? Would I personally buy it? If my answer is yes, I will buy it right away.

We want domain sales, not to collect domains. Nonetheless, we sell only a fraction of our stock. Of course, if we were to price the domains at merely double what we paid, our stock would disappear quickly. Though many exceptions aim higher, we generally aim for $5000 - $15,000 retail sales, and salability (sale ability?) on that spectrum is a key factor for us.

Great points, kellyparker!

These days, clear, memorable names with strong brand potential stand out most.
