Hi all,

Pardon my short post, im on my mobile phone. I was just checking out one of my sites and realized it got hacked and is now being redirected to an anti Israel website. My site is hosted on cookiehost. The hackers site is also on cookiehost. My site is a forum, everything got whiped out ;(

My question is whether just my forum got hacked, or my whole cookiehost account.

What would u guys do in my situation?

Thanks in advance.

"!! We will hack your servers as long the Palestinians get murdered !!" --> from the hacker's site.

Can't tell you without seeing the data. Contact your provider, restore from backups.

Its seem that it's a server security issue.

You may contact your web hosting provider.

if the hacker's site is also on cookiehost, it means that they got hacked and not your account there or your forum exactly. my suggest would be to switch hosts. it would seem that the hackers are targeting cookiehost - not you.

Same thing happened to me. I've opened a ticket with cookiehost because I'm unable to login to my cpanel account. I can login to my wordpress interface and it looks like the content there is untouched.

Not sure it's related but thought I'd share this I found a few days back. Apologies for not seeing this thread earlier..

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3649281,00.html

Seems there are a few people out there hacking websites and putting anti-Israel messages on them.

I suppose it's better than blowing up the data centers. But it's still not nice.

I suggest you light a fire under your host by calling in the hate-crimes unit of the law enforcement agencies that have jurisdiction over your host's city and state. Maybe someday they'll even catch the bad guys. In the meantime, at least the statistics on this sort of thing will be complete and perhaps useful patterns recognized.

Also call your host's local paper with the story. That ought to get the host to make a commitment to better security in the future.

You could also call the ADL if you want expert security advice, or call CAMERA for advice on what responses, if any, you could post to correct any misinformation posted by the "cyber-terrorists".

Did you mean to imply that the hackers' method is to get an account on the same shared server as their target site, and then use their shell access or some other programming techniques that they could not have done "from the outside"?

Just how safe are shared hosting users from each other if one is malicious???

Hatred leads to even more hatred.

Such acts not only set humanitarian measures back, but also instill a constant fear among the common man.

....to think that a simple thing like a website can be used to breed hatred against a certain section of people....

I feel sorry for you man - and I hope that cookiehost restores your site.

Just to give you guys an update, Cookiehost didn't even bother replying to my open support ticket, they simply deleted it! Wtf? I will be switching hosts shortly and I'm sure more people will to. seems like the host is vulnerable based on so many different types of sites that got hacked.

Who are they?

Who are they?
Their site looks like maybe a GoDaddy reseller.

They've got privacy on their whois record; which is OK for a blogger but is a no no for any legit business.

They've got no working phone number nor street address shown on their site.
(That;s the street address of their payment agent, not them)

How did you pick them???

I picked them because last year they had a promo for their "maxi" package for about $12.

What would you guys recommend for a host? I checked out Host Monster and will probably be going with them. Seems like a no brainer for 5.99/mo (36 mo's) for unlimited everything.

Thanks again all.

I suggest fusedhosting, both owners are from Namepros and one is a moderator for the webhosting forums here

There's no such thing as "unlimited everything". It's sort of dishonest to pretend that they're selling unlimited, because of course they can't. Servers will typically run out of memory or CPU power long before they run out of disk or bandwidth, especially if sites run scripts rather than static HTML.

Somewhere in the Terms & Conditions you'll discover that there are limits of this sort, beyond which you'll be told to get a dedicated server. Or else the tiny sole proprietorship will just up and disappear some day; that's happened to me too. One day the server (and company) was gone.

Anyone who is attracting customers with promises of "unlimited everything" is counting on the fact that most customers dream big but use very little resources. If that describes you, they'll keep you. If you actually become unprofitable, they'll dump you. They can't survive actually delivering unlimited.

But if your needs are well defined and within reason, you don't really need an "unlimited plan"; you need hosting that's reliable and fast, with responsive support, and a complete supply of easy to use functions (like the control panel you want (cpanel vs plesk, etc.), webmail, fantastico, etc. )

You may also have additional preferences, such as "green" webhosting, etc. But don't pick a host on a promise of "unlimited everything". You won't get to use it.

hello to all,

I myself have been a victim of attacks but mine was basicaly
they upload a .htaccess file with a numbered phpfile to your server and this sends out calls to another web site on the internet not to sure of the principal behind it but they are supposed to make money doing this how ? ive not got a clue and not realy interested.

in fact i would prefer them to hack my site and maybe muck the files up rather than stick these 2 files into each folder as to get rid of is a nightmare so beware of this method as above describes watch out for the .htacess file in the same directory as a numbered php.

+1 for fused hosting, their support is second to none. I've only been with them for a short time but they are always quick to respond & diligent to solve an issue.
