WARNING: How to Avoid Domain Scams and Scammers

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
Prevention:

Google the domain (also try adding words like stolen, scammed, help, missing, etc), asking other domainers about the domain in question, checking the various marketplaces and making sure things add up... The biggest single indicator of a potential scam is the price. A scammer will want to price the domain low enough that it sells before he gets caught. Keep a watchful eye on new members. Recently modified whois is another warning sign. If other indicators are present (ex. extremely low price), proceed with extreme caution.

Some known scams:

1. Appraisal Scam -- If they ask for an appraisal, it's probably a scam.

2. Snail mail scam letters -- Letters through the mail reminding you to renew your domains from companies which aren't your current registrar

3. Compromised web-based email accounts and keyloggers -- Using an email provided to you by your Internet Service Provider is generally safer than web-based email solutions. There have been known security flaws in certain webmail applications in the past (ex. Gmail) which made compromising member accounts considerably easier than guessing a password. Understand the risks involved with using a web-based solution. Download spyware software such as Adaware Lavasoft and scan your computer daily. Keyloggers are A) easy to put on someone's computer and B) potentially catastrophic to a web based business.

4. Unauthorizing funds (particularly bad with Paypal). Paypal makes it very easy to create chargebacks. Don't accept large amounts by Paypal unless you're dealing with people you absolutely trust. Moneybookers/Escow.com are a step above Paypal, however the best option would be to go with a true escrow service such as Sedo Escrow, Moniker Domain Escrow Service or EscrowDNS.

5. Emails saying your domain requires renew/transfer/you to take a certain action. Check the email and make sure that A) it's from your registrar and B) the url mentioned matches what your registrar's would be. Safer to just visit the registrar than click the links in the email.

6. Incorrect Whois emails -- if your whois isn't incorrect, beware. Phone your registrar if you think they made a mistake.

7. Traffic/Click Fraud -- Self explanatory. If it isn't direct navigation it shouldn't be sold as such. Due diligence is required here.

8. Hijacking -- If you use one of your own domain names as the nameserver, be sure to make sure it doesn't expire or someone could fraudulently gain control of your domains.

9. Escrow.com is NOT 100% safe. They do not cover stolen domains -- buyer beware. Don't think processing a "bargain" through Escrow.com won't potentially end in you being out money. In the event a domain is stolen from someone's account, the domain WILL be returned to the original owner and you'll be out whatever you paid for the domain.

10. One thing I should add: Most free webmail providers will delete accounts after certain periods of inactivity. A clever scammer could notice that your Hotmail/Yahoo/other webmail account had expired, register that same email address (which is now available) and then proceed to "Request Password" at various registrars using what was previously your email address. If you plan on using your webmail infrequently, it's recommend you verify what amount of inactivity is tolerable and won't result in email account deletion.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Please list all your stolen domains here: http://forums.DigitalPoint/showthread.php?p=6560752#post6560752

Only list your names and keep it clean and simple, this is to have one spot with all the stolen domains listed and nothing else for easy reference.

I put the thread on DP because that is where most of the dirty deals have happened.

Speaking from experience, do not depend on GoDaddy office of the president for help against scammers; although their TOS allow them to help, they consistently side with scammers by taking no action, particularly Alon Waisman.

NAMEPROS PHISHING attack. Do not follow the link. It is not a namepros link. They want to stealyour account, so that they change the password and then buy some domains with stolen paypal using your identity. BEWARE everybody.

Matter already reported to staff. And everybody, I can't understand why you complain in a thread like this instead of reporting it to staff immediately.

I just got a PM with that by the same member.

SO I JUST WANT TO SAY 2 LITTLE THINGS TO THIS B@STARD:

1) I WON`T FORGIVE YOU , I WON`T REPORT YOU TO AUTHORITIES , I CAN`T WRITE WHAT I`LL DO.

2) I`LL CHASE YOU WHEREVER YOU ARE, MEXICO OR AFRICA I DON`T MIND, I`LL KEEP CHASING YOU TILL I`LL DO WHAT I NEED TO DO AND YOU WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRAY.

I think the Namepros staff and the Mods should now take a stand and protect us from this!!!!!!

They should now stop all new member registrations on Namepros untill there system here is clean of scammers all what is happening is you report Asys he then just pops along and creates another account.

And a member on NP will click the link and will pass over there info and another NP is cheated.

If they stop new members from joining any scammers on Namepros will be filtered out and banned.

Also banning there IP address

don't hold back Lorenzo ... tell us how you really feel.

all kidding aside ... I agree.

money and grief is at bounty-hunter level now.

The scary thing about this is they steal bonafide members details. Along with this comes the members reputation. If the member has a good rep the more likely you are to do business with them. Then the more likely you are going to get scammed before the fraud comes to light. Once this happens to you you won't trust anyone again....believe me it just happened to me yesterday on DP!

the bigger part of the problem is PayPal. If we all stop using PayPal they`ll go back scamming on eBay.

should be fine then, I don't think there's any cookie-snatching compromise they can do ...

Might be appropriate counter-measure to spam the spammer ... that is - visit their bogus login page and enter some bogus login info ... if enough people do this, then they'll have mostly garbage for their harvest. Maybe best to do it through a proxy service though, just to be on the safe side with regard to revealing your IP address. Extra-paranoid folks might want to first log out of NP to clear all cookies - but that's being gratuitous just for the sake of it - good security habit though.

If somehow Lorenzo, you will find out that these phishing scammers are from Eastern Europe, count me in whatever your plans are.

Stopping new member registrations is not a good idea, this is not the purpose of NP, the most open domain discussion forum. I think the staff is competent here, and will find a solution by which they will trace these scammers, and won't let them in to steal reputable members history.

Now you understand people why I use MB for payment? Even if I get a PM from a reputable member as Lorenzo is, I may not be 100% sure that it is him PM'ing me. By using a safe payment gateway, and refusing dealing with companies that protect scammers I am pretty well assured that I won't get scammed.

(Now I know Lorenzo is Lorenzo, I gave his example, because we know that he is indeed ItalianDragon and not smb else).

Hello

I might have an idea on how to avoid being scammed. But first I would like to ask: what happens when the buyer initiates a chargeback but the seller's paypal and bank account has NO funds for the chargeback?

PayPal balance goes negative and PayPal will come after you till you pay.

Thanks for the trust but I disagree, I could have my PayPal account cracked as well (because this is cracking not hacking if we need to use the correct terms).
I am not using PayPal anymore till all this is sorted out. (which probably will never happen with PayPal) so if anyone claims to be me: just send back an email address to the email in the whois asking if it`s me really......double check always , never trust anyone.

Okay here's the idea: Guys n gals tell me what you think.

1) Create a new premier paypal account. Do not add a credit card no. This account will become your middle-man account.

2) When receiving payment from buyers get them to send money to that middle-man account.

3) Do not push the domain to the buyer yet, do the following: send the money in your middle-man account to YOUR REAL ACCOUNT.

4) Push the domain to the buyer. If he or she initiates a chargeback. There is no money to chargeback from!! All the funds have been sent to your REAL account!!

5) I dunno if paypal will actually withdraw the funds you sent to your real account back to your middle-man account. If that happens then this method probably won't work.

I dunno much about paypal policy and stuff so I dunno if it will work. Please comment on this idea!

That`s WHY PayPal frooze all my accounts back last August when I was trying to protect me against another new buyer.

I had to fax my IDs to paypal + Bills and wasted so much time to release my money that they simply told that it`s not allowed to have more than 1 account for person and when I told them that they should do something about protection for non tangible items.......did they listen ? :bah:

Do you get it or not? People get divorced when things do not work but you people seem don`t want to leave PayPal?

1. Logging into 2 premier accounts from same ip address isnt good idea when using paypal because if one account has issues and limited in use then another account becomes limited too.
2. Sooner or later you gotta pay that -amount as far as I know

The only question is, how long do intertransfers take and I am pretty sure they will be able to trace the transfer.

When I recieved the $ for the stolen domains I instantly transfered them to my bank account, but they stopped the transfer...doesnt that mean the funds were not in their system anymore? Weren't they technically nowhere?

Even TDNAM is being scammed ( I sold twice 3 LLLL.com few days ago and both times buyers were fraudolent).

In other cases, TDNAM had to pay sellers who transfered domains after receiving authorisation messages from TDNAM and then buyer chargebacked so no way to get domains from other Registrars so TDNAM paid sellers and scammers got domains for free.

I stopped using PayPal and stopped selling domains too unless I`m paid by wire to my bank account.

It`s becoming a mess as more people get in the industry also more scammers have seen that it`s so easy to scam domainers and when they do not even get punished there you go.....who is going to stop them?

It is getting so beyond control and so serious that if we do not stop it soon, it may crash the whole industry......the press and media already talk so bad about us that they only need to label domaining as "scammers paradise". :veryangry:

Scammer in Dynadot marketplace

Some of my LLLL.Com domains are registered with DynaDot, and I put them in their marketplace just in order to entertain offers. couple of days ago I recieved some very good offers but I didnt bother replying that time and today when I wanted to reply this guy about considering offer on one of the domains he made offers on, I found out this thread on Dynadot forum when googling his mail id..

http://www.dynadot.com/resource/for...i-m-buying-llll-com-s-and-ccc-com-s-1672.html

Probably they closed his account but still we have one lesson to learn :alien:

Lesson : Google each email ID You recieve from the buyer before making any Deal :snaphappy:
