W-9 tax information required - GoDaddy auctions

I got an email from godaddy about one domain that i sold on godaddy auctions. They want Tax information from me.

Dear ---------,

Before we can release payment for -------- to you we need you to update your tax information at Godaddy.com. Please follow these steps to update your information:

Log into your account at Godaddy.com
Click the My Account button (top right)
Click the Settings Tab
Click Payee Accounts (to the left)
Click View/Edit next to your Payee Account
Click the "I am a U.S. Person" option and fill out your address and tax information


Once you have filled out the required information scroll down and confirm your bank account information and click save changes. Please reply to this email once you have completed these steps so we can ensure payment is sent as soon as possible. If you have any questions reply to this email or give us a call directly at 480-366-3303.

I am not a registered tax payer in my country(pakistan). I am not an american citizen nor do I live in America. Why are they sending me this? Do I really have to pay tax?

p.s. Just to make it clear all the whois info(address, phone, country) is correct and I am not using any fake US addresses. So doesn't make any sense why would they send this to me.

I ran into same thing. I'm in Canada. Your situation may be different. I had to fill in form w-8 ben. This exempts from US withholding.

Yes - let them know you are not a US-citizen.

Like JoeCanadian said - as a non-american - I'm pretty sure I filled out a W8BEN for every US based company that I get money from.

The same form probably applies to you.

Acually I sent them an email yesterday morning and got back a reply at night. They said I can choose the non us resident option and avoide to pay any tax etc.
I think now I understand where the problem lies. For payment method I have chosen EFT via payoneer. Payoneer.com provides a unique service which is called "US payment service". Its like a virtual US back account attached to master card debit card. I have made my payee profile using the details given by payoneer. So godaddy thinks I have a US bank account. So my guess is that's why they are sending me this demand for tax info.
If I change the details to a non US resident then the EFT option from the payee profile disappears and only paypal and good as gold option is available.
I want to get paid via payoneer service. That''s what I'v told them in my reply email. I hope they will give me a solution as I do not want to use paypal.

If I fill W8BEN then will they deduct any tax?

After all these years buying domains at godaddy I never had to contact their support and now I realize that they take atleast 10-12 hours to respond to each email.
And unlike all the other registrars godady doesn't have a live chat support system. They do have a US phone number but its not toll free so can not call for free from skype. Very bad.

No they will not deduct tax after filling in form w8Ben. You are certifying that you do not carry on a business in the US.

Just want to update you guys. This worked out in the end. I sent them the W8BEN form via email and turns out it was only a formality. I didn't even properly fill the form. I mean I didn't even sign it and yet I got the payment from godaddy which means it was accepted.
But I just think that godaddy could have been more helpful. I remember Google adsense asks for simmilar information when you sign up with them for the first time and you don't have to fill the W8BEN form you just have to tell them on their site your name and address and acknowledge that you are not an American. That's all they need. But tax forms direct from IRS confuse most people. Atleast someone like me who is total noob with taxes.

Hey Im adding a payee method to my account. I'm using Payoneer US payment service ( virtual bank) and now they're asking for tax forms. I'm not a US citizen and not sure what to do from here..
