While not all .TV domains have to be developed into videocentric sites, the proponents of .TV do point out how it fits well with video-oriented web portals. True development requires a considerable amount of effort and can only be done well with a finite number of domains. However, leaving a .TV domain in parking doesn't promote the extension well. So somewhat as a marketing tool and also to get the clock started in the event I develop these domains more fully in the future, I launched the following domains using Youtube's API widget. Just create a playlist within your Youtube account, select relevant videos you like and then choose Developers, Widgets, then under Customer Players select Custom Video Players and create a Custom Player for the desired playlist. Youtube does offer more advanced customizable options for those more comfortable with Javascript, but I tried and had to resort to this most basic version. In either case, I was able to produce the following video landing pages over several days...

Accountancy.tv
Activewear.tv
AgenciadeModelos.tv
AntiqueCars.tv
BoatShow.tv
Bolsos.tv
BusinessSchool.tv
CaribbeanVacations.tv
CarrosDeportivos.net
Chicanos.tv
CityofMiami.tv
CoinCollecting.tv
Collectibles.tv
EscueladeBelleza.net
EscueladeNegocios.tv
EuropeanVacations.tv
FinancialMarkets.tv
Fisicoculturismo.tv
LakeBuenaVista.tv
Menswear.tv
MercadodeValores.tv
ModelAgency.tv
Paintings.tv
RopaDeportiva.tv
Safaris.tv

Note there are a couple of .Nets in here as well but a .Net domain can use video too :)

Hey Garp,

Very cool info.
Thanks for sharing.

and I agree, these video landing pages do seem a ton better than just parng our .tv domains.

You have created a pretty damn good portfolio of .tv mini-sites so I want to ask you a coupla questions...

How long did it take you to create eachh of these?

and do you think it would take a little longer, or a lot longer time to create these pages for someone - not as experienced as you?

I really like the paragraph you have directing users to your PremiumDomains site, that is pretty awesome.

Oh, by the way...You've been repped!

Thanks,
Vito

That's great! Sedo certainly isn't doing us any favors, so we may as well do what we can to develop and promote our own portfolios. Yesterday I went to sedo and searched "canoes," and canoes.tv didn't even come up in the top 200 search results. "Here's your sign!"

So:

I started doing something similar with wordpress. It's not hard, but it is rather time consuming and tedious. First the name server changes, then the installation of wordpress, then the customization of each site. I'm doing it in chunks... bulk name server changes to all my domains at name.com, then one by one setting up hosting accounts, and installing wordpress. Then going back and adding content. Then it's on to my enom names, then godaddy... Does anyone know if there's a more efficient way to install wordpress on multiple sites?

If you decide to go this route, one thing you'll probably want is a hosting account which allows you to host unlimited domain names for one price. Mine costs approx. $20 a month, although I may have to add a little more disk space as I get all my names on there. Basic wordpress install takes 10mb of space which is one disadvantage. A few pages of html and css are very light by comparison.

Anyway - after the initial installs are done, I'll go back and start fleshing out the ones that get traffic or high cpc, adding good content, affiliate programs, etc.

While in "development," I'm thinking of doing a redirect to my main site, hotdomains.tv because right now, some of my names will just get you to the hello world wordpress welcome note. Probably not too effective, huh?

It's a work in progress, the operative word being "work." Good thing it's fun and challenging work.

What other methods are people using? Anyone contracting the development work? I've been contemplating that, and have gotten a proposal from one developer, but the per-site price was too steep for my meager budget.

You might like dreamhost. You cannot bulk add Wordpress but they have this thing called 'one click installs' that makes adding a wordpress install very easy. I can add a domain, change the nameservers and add a wp blog in under five minutes.

Customizing the blog and adding content is a different story, thats the time consuming part for me.

No limit on domains/wp-installs either. .

As I mentioned, if you stick with the most basic design, then the process is as follows:

-select a basic template which can be applied across multiple domains so that you don't have to do a lot of customization
-create a directory within your hosting account for each domain and redirect the nameservers for each domain to your hosting account
-I use XSitePro2 with the XHeader addin so for each domain I selected a suitable header or as close as I could find, inserted the domain name text and created a border and then inserted this header into each site
-For each site one has to modify a few keywords, alt tags, text description which is quick & simple to do
-For each Youtube playlist select up to eight decent-quality videos you like relevant to the theme. In many cases I would select 9-12 and then delete the lower-quality ones. The basic design limits the selection to eight videos.
-Create the custom player and insert the Youtube-generated HTML code. Then modify the size as needed to fit into your template.
-I also added the playlist below the player as a larger size and slightly modified the video size from the default.
-Make sure to adjust the publishing detail for each site and publish.
-Submit site to Google/Yahoo/Bing & mention on a couple of forums so that each site can index in the coming weeks
-Max one hour per site though obviously the first one took more time as I tried the more advanced custom design options which require some knowledge of Javascript. I thought I could edit my way around it but no luck.

Note a .TV community member is developing a more advanced solution with more videos and the ability to add an Adsense or Amazon.com affiliate block. He commented that it would only be for English sites so I decided to at least learn how to create a basic video landing page myself.

Another point is that in my description I not only mention the possibility of acquiring the domain but that businesses interested in video placement on the site could do that as well. Keep in mind many individuals aren't familiar with or dislike the concept of acquiring aftermarket domains but paying a small fee to advertise a business on a nice keyword .TV might be more acceptable. And IF you could land a few video placements that would likely outperform any parking or affiliate solution.

I took another look at this after you mentioned it. They do mention a revenue share with publishers (probably not much but more than we currently make off Youtube videos). Given I have some self-developed .TV sites, I could give this a try on a few domains.

I haven't used them because the tech stuff is too complex for me to figure out. But yes, you do make money if you use their feed.
