I guess I'm getting old, but I need to write things down to try to clear my ideas of recent developments, and how to handle the changing environment. One of my current problems stems from the increasing number of Bitcoin forks, and how to profit from them for example. I've decided that the best way to handle these situations is to create a domain and document my findings and ideas. I can then use this to get various comments from people, and to clarify my path forward. This seems to be useful in a number of areas, and not just finance or banking. Health and food buying are two other areas that I need to monitor.

Does anybody else do this, and do they find it beneficial?

This thread is not intended to be a discussion about Bitcoin, but about the personal use of domain names.

You are using domains to collect feedback? Collect data? Write articles?

Instead of buying domains randomly for ideas that I don't get around to, I've started creating & using sub-domains. Essentially a free domain to validate the project or idea.

Will save a lot of money. :)

More NPs members should use sub-domains. Who agrees? Already use them?

I'm using a couple as an aide-memoire.

I agree that sub-domains can be useful, but if they are successful, it leaves you open to somebody trying to pick up traffic by registering the string without the dot. For example, I experimented with the sub-domain radio.kuffy, but I registered the name RadioKuffy as well, and redirected traffc to the sub-domain. It's a few months since I worked on this, but I think the structure is still there.

Rather than using sub-domains, I started to use sub-directories. This removes the risk of traffic loss, and can allow you to use a cheaper hosting package if you want to use multiple hosting companies.

I'm not worried about someone registering the domain without the dot. The sub-domains are to validate the project or idea.

Sub-directories work well too.

If I was going to buy a domain for one of these projects, I'd look for a brandable. Unrelated to the sub-domain.

Do companies, devs, designers worry about registering all the sub-domains they create?

I'm thinking of picking up a "usable" - maybe a two word description. That way, I may get some surfers onto the site, and pick up some ad revenue.
