unless you have a crystal ball, if it is just sitting unregistered these days, it's not good enough for any other person to register it let alone buy it from you.
nonetheless, the chances are you might have some luck and sell some)

My advice: do not buy a domain that you would not personally use for business.

Also ponder the comment just above me: most of the best names are already registered.

using google keyword tool to register domain names is NOT FOR NEWBIES.

why?

because they don't know enough about domains to ascertain whether those results are flawed or not.

also, google search volume does NOT equal the number of visitors that term may get if registered as a domain name.

Even though we all know that the GREAT NAMES have been registered long long ago and it will be impossible for the majority of us to buy them ( x.xxx.xxx or xxx.xxx ), there are still some money to be earned.

If your goal is to find a good cheap domain that you can resell for profit in the near future then you could try with the so called " new trends " but you will have to be prepared to invest some money to buy in different trends, to hold on to your domains maybe for years and to be aware that some trends will never take off aka you wasted your money.

Another way is to go with expired / dropped / dropping domains but be prepared for a lot of competition.

With generic domains or keyword rich ones it's all about CPC, traffic, exact monthly searches and bla bla BUT my personal opinion is that the time of those names is gone. They are dead. You will still see domainers buying and sell them but imo that's the old school, the old internet. The time for brandables has come.
As more and more business are going online ( even the small shop around the corner ) the need of brandabled is increasing everyday so that's where I would go.

Determining if a brandable is good or not is everything but easy because you don't have many rules you can follow, It's more about personal taste. But never buy something you wouldn't use as the name of your new born and much loved little business.

I look forward to seeing other people's comments too.

You have to options:
1- Go with exact search term/keyword/ generic domains
and yes there are different tools to measure the exact monthly searches and CPC. The problem with this option that there aren't any more meaningful domains to reg them, they are all gone. So you can monitor the dropping ones and try to backorder, bid, or if you lucky reg them after dropping. Or you can try to buy them in the after market where it is hard to get them in reseller pric (unless someone who did not know their value)

2- Go with brandables domain names. Here you have to be creative and do some brainstorming to come up with a name that could be used in high business field. IMO, there no limits for those domains, cause everyone has his way in thinking, yes the experience is a ranking factor in this, but if someone has the ability to combine words, or play with their letter to come up with a good term/ word/ phrase that can fit a rich industry, he/she will get a high opportunity to sell it at good price.
