I am thinking about getting into the TV domains. Quick question though..... How do I tell if a name already registered is a premium renewal? For example say I wanted to buy "watch.tv" off someone. Obviously its a premium but how do I tell how much the renewal is?

Thanks

Welcome to the .tv world ! :)

To check whether a .tv domain is premium and to know what the premium is, you can use this tool :
http://www.ahead.tv/domainers/premium-renewal-checker.php

For example, you'll find out that watch.tv is a premium domain and that its annual renewal fee is $50.

A quick tip : .tv premium domains can only be registered through eNom. So if you see a .tv domain which is registered at GoDaddy, Dotster, Dynadot, etc., you know that it's definitely not a premium.

Thanks Repped....

Second questions now....

What happens to premium .tvs that expire? how long do they take to come back and can you backorder them through enom or is it just a grab when they are available.

I believe that premium domains follow the normal drop cycle. To my knowledge, there is no way to backorder a premium. You can backorder regular .TVs at Domain Monster.

When .tv premiums expire, they go through the same process as non-premium .tv domains (redemption period...).

At the moment, premium .tv domains can't be backordered, so it's just a matter of who grab them first when they're released.

Note something specific about .tv domains registered through GoDaddy (which are all non-premium). When they expire, they're available on TDNAM and they go to the highest bidder (just like .com domains).

Repped to both of you thanks!

However does anyone know how long it takes from expiration until it can be regged again?

If i remember well -this can be confirmed by other members-, give a 45 days grace period before the domain goes into redemption after the expiration date. The domains stays in redemption for approximately 30 days. At the end of the redepemtion period the domain goes into pending delete for 5 days and on the 6th day it is released to the public.
Hope this helps.

UPDATE:

I was waiting on geek.tv to become available. It used to have a renewal fee of $250....

I waited and waited. today it dropped just to find the renewal price raised to $5000...

Quite a steep raise if you ask me... I was REALLY excited about it but after this I am realizing how much .TV is a catch-22 as far as value..

How often can they raise these renewal prices?

I don't believe there is any limit to how high they can raise premiums once they expire.

After 16 months or experiencing my own trials and tribulations, my advice would be to avoid expiring premium domains until Verisign is able to restore a little sanity to the pricing.

Thier logic confuses me too.

I picked up a drop at regfee about a month back, but then a few weeks later the plural of the word dropped and became $10,000. I'm just wondering if that raises the value of my reg...

What do you think about this 'logic'?

Maximizing profits, that is all it is about. Their aim is to eek every last dollar of value out of a sale.

Looks like that may have been their plan all along. Pump and dump using a few industry based co-conspirators. Then again......

Don't know about the "dump" part, but the "pump" part is certainly true, that is the how it has always been with registrars.

What stinks is I was going to develop the name and honestly put my computer tutorials online, do a "Ask the Geek" section, and even had a few buddies of my in art school that were planning on developing a "geek" cartoon.....

Well maybe someone who has $50,000 will come along reg it for 5 years and run with a business plan to try to profit from it......

Either way this has been a total turn-off for me regarding dotTV, the entire extension is wack.....

Verisign is a master of the corporate profits game. Think back to when all .com regs were $35 a year but they invoiced ya so you didnt have to pay for 6 months, if ever. In their accrual accounting world every domain regd was $70 of income the minute the invoice was drawn. If it was never paid for it might eventually be charged back as an uncollectable debt, but that was an event that might take at least a couple of years to play out. Thats why they persisted in sending out notice after notice. Meanwhile they seemed like an exceptionally profitable company, one growinf fast and deserving of a 40+ PE ratio. Of course it was Network Solutions doing this but V bought them, merged, digested the parts it wanted and after awhile shit out the parts it didnt. You can bet that whatever possible remaining liabilities existed went with the shit.

And you guys think domain spec is somethin'.

Hey now! Thats no attitude to build a profitable world around! Why dont you try to present your development plan to them. Verisign really doesn't want speculators buying into .tv. They want developers! If they know you're serious and will put up a real site of quality theres a good chance they'll let you have it for a reasonable price. It wont cost you much to ask...

A refreshing post Finster and some good advice to SMBGeek.

There has been post after post about eNom increasing dropped Premium renewals. I cant recall any post suggesting that it is Verisign, and not eNom, that has increased the renewal fees on dropped Premiums. The assumption has just been it is eNom behind the increase.

Thanks for the recent posts Finster (aka "The Brain"). Rep added. :gl:

Well Mark (Heroes) when you call Verisign they will not even entertain a premium question, two different people, two different days said "You need to speak to ENOM, they handle the premium domains and the pricing." I asked who can I speak to about getting a premium domain for less than it was offered. If Verisign was raising the premium I do not think they would be doing surveys paying $100 to ask people to give opinions on the premium pricing. But you never know could all be just a ploy.

And if you have a great development plan you can use any domain. GeekChannel.tv or GeekTV.tv
