So you have a competitor. They have a generic name (no trademark issue) .COM. The .TV version of their name is open.

Do you reg the .TV version to put that company in a bind when you launch the .TV version for your site?

This a tough ethical question.

8 years of military school and college and my mental model is deny the enemy territory that he can use against you.

Wow, tough choice. Luckily the .TV in question is a premium and costs $7,500 a year. Still tough one. I want to destory their resolve and get them thinking emotional (ie "how dare he do that").

If no TM issues, then why not?

Military tactics can work surprisingly well in business, which is why ex-military tend to get hired quickly.

Of course, I would say that you would need to dev something different then the dot com, or it could be looked at as kind of a hostage or squatting attempt.
