Did I hear that correctly? Did they name the site using a term commonly associated with drugs?
They said the word Tripping.com several times. But then they went a step further
Without that confirmation, I’m not sure if I would have believed that the site name was tripping.com. I assume people don’t hear it correctly or do no believe it’s actually tripping.com, which is why they included the spelling in the ad...

While the name might be associated in minds of some to drug use, I'm not sure the name actually has a negative connotation due to that.

Don't know about other regions but for my region, south-Asia, its a good name.

Well another meaning is falling over an obstacle. I've never heard it used in association with the travel industry. Maybe it would be good for travel to places friendly to drug addicts. :)

Most associate it with falling over an obstacle. Not the best choice for a travel site.

The problem with a name like that is that when it starts getting some bad press or customers are upset it's going to be very easy to exploit the very core of the brand which is its domain name. From a marketing and branding standpoint, why put yourself through that? Bad choice imo.

Promote Ayahuasca tours maybe?

Tripping is what happens when people take too many drugs. That's what we call it here in New Zealand :playful:

Great. It stands out incredibly well, and is memorable.

They have you guys talking/posting about them, for example. That's free advertising.

I can see the marketing now...

One free small bag of mushrooms with every travel purchase (we are not responsible if you see a red queen or you are pulled down a hole by a giant rabbit).

Just noticed they started an affiliate program at cj.com

"Tripping.com is the world's largest search engine for vacation and short-term rentals. With over 10 million properties in 150,000 destinations, Tripping.com gives you the widest selection of unique accommodations around the world. As a Tripping Affiliate, you will be able to offer the best deals on vacation rentals to your visitors."

Yelp was the sound a dog makes when you kick it. Or the sound you make when you stub your toes.

Now it's a $3.5 billion dollar company.

Tripping.com is a pretty good - and memorable - brand name. I think the connotations can be overcome, much like how Yelp has overcome the negative connotations of its brand.

When I read the domain the first thought that comes to mind is the slang use of it. "Yo you trippin" I know it is missing the g in it but that is what comes to mind =-D. It is memorable though and catchy so it does have the chance to overcome the other meanings and be a strong foundation to a travel site brand.

Most powerful brands take a word that means something and simply make it their own brand. A very good example is Amazon.com since the first thought that probably came to mind before the brand was built was the Amazon jungle. Now Amazon has built such a strong brand that it pretty much overcame any other meaning.

Look, it generated a reaction in most of you, whether positive or negative, doesn't matter. It now stands the chance of being memorable.

I'd say it's a success and you guys are being autistic. (y)

@DPankaew really never heard that and that's the last thing i or majority of people associate with when i ear Yelp, plus it's hard to find on google explanation that states yelp is a sound a dog makes.

Also i just don't think yelp is even similar to a sound a dog makes, but from a quick search on google it seem's it's true, we learn new things every day :xf.smile:

IMO..

Great. It stands out incredibly well, and is memorable.

They have you guys talking/posting about them, for example. That's free advertising.

I also think tripping.com is a great brandable domain with potential.

- It gets people to talk about it and interact, so free advertising.

- Even if you advertise it and people only see the domain tripping.com it get's curiosity flowing.

- Appeals to a big demographic.

- You search on google for travel and it pops up with tripping.com your mind may associate with other things but if they see the meta description with something like "find the best and cheapest trips/flights" i think they will associate tripping with the term trip.

- I do think world wide most people associate with tripping on drugs but i don't think that's bad thing in this case because the word tripping and the definition of being on drugs doesn't have that heavy dark negative association.

example: if you see or ear Hitler.com that's a heavy name that you automatically associate with bad and negative things so most people would try to avoid clicking on the domain or something with the word scam like scamify.com, i remember when i saw some websites/domains with negative words like scam i would automatically avoid it even if i known it was a secure and legal site.

IMO..
