Premium letters or Big BS ?

I am known for never shutting my mouth even if I have nothing to gain, simply because I hate BS…I hate lies, I simply hate wrong things.

There is a myth going around from years in the industry: Premium letters.

Newbies asked me this many times. What is a Premium letter? And what is a non premium letter.

Some website in the past created this “fable” and lots of sheeps…ehm pardon me “investors” believed that since they believed that some letters were not Premium, they did not buy them so the prices of acronym domains (such as LLL or LLLL) started to decrease.

The habit grew so much that in a catch 22 or paradox, what that site originally wrote , was starting to become true. Like if I wrote that “pigs fly” in 2003 and all people coming later were believing it, then you`ll hear in 2008 that yes pigs fly and by reading this everywhere, a new domainer may start believing pigs REALLY fly.

Years later, in 2008, the fable is still going on.

That`s enough , it`s time to look at REAL DATAS and be smarter than sheeps.

Will read the entry shortly, I promise.

My opinion: Premium letters are entirely BS.

What matters isn't the letters, but how they're arranged -- eg. "YI" is a much stronger combination than "IY".

Premium is just a lazy, uneducated domainer's way of evaluating domains.

"FH" in example is a much worse 2 letter combination than "WO", despite "W" supposedly being non-premium... It's all about how the letters are arranged.

Indeed you have to look a the whole name. For example sex.com contains one bad letter ;) But it's a word and not an acronym so applying the same rules doesn't make sense.
On the other hand ABC.COM sure is worth more than QKH.COM don't you think ?
Now I have to say those holding names like xqxi.com who are waiting for a Chinese end user make me smile :)

Agreed ! :tu:

I think we can all agree that certain letters are used in everyday words more often than others , But I think people are taking the "Premium Letters" thing way too far. Most times I see a certain letter shunned as "Crap" - I think about 1 Letter Domains .... The very letters I see shunned would be the letters I'd prefer over all other 1 Letter Domains ;)

I think it all comes down to "Don't believe everything you read" - After all , How do you know the people placing these "opinions" on forums and sites have any more experience than you do ?

Hi Kate, I have seen many people smile but I`m seeing more and more Chinese domainers around and if you go around the corner you`ll find:

http://www.wqxi.com to be an american one. :bingo:

There is NO such thing is "premium letters".

It is made up myth by some people.

Period.

If you just bung it into Google, that will tell you if that combination is used anywhere on the planet. If it is not then it is just a potential brandable, just like any other potential brandable. But if it is not already in use somewhere, how can you possibly know whether or not it might be perceived as being cool? If somebody else starts trading under this combination, unless you have gone to the expense of setting up a business yourself then they would have a strong case for UDRP. Set against that, the chances of two companies dropping on the same thing and wanting to compete in an auction situation are billions to one. Why bother?

IMHO there is certainly a such thing as premiums. Should it
be that way? Maybe not. However, the fact remains that those
combos containing certain letters do indeed sell for more $$
than others. Take rsc.com vs. qzx.com...we all know what one
would fetch more. I don't see the outlook changing anytime
soon as to how domainers view the current system in place.

Of course I could be totally wrong but this is just my observation :p

You're 100% right Keith -- they do sell for more on average and often 3 premium letters are better than 3 non-premium ones, as your RSC.com example elucidates quite well -- very few LLL.coms would be considered better than that.

One counter-example that comes to mind for me instantly is NSX.com -- and not just because it's a car, but because "SX" is more brandable than many 2 premium letter combinations imho.

On average, I'll be the first to agree that premium letters are better, but I think domainers make serious mistakes when they say (and make offers of) $15,000+ on any all premium LLL.com, when in fact many of these are inferior to what could be bought for 9-10k.
