Just wondering what will happen when you transfer a domain that still has a few years on it to a new registrar. Will the expiration date be removed to one year from the date of the transfer, will it add an extra year to the domain or does all of this depend on the new registrar? :)

when you transfer to a new registrar a year will be added to the previous expiration date

you see , the duration (and expiration) of a domain is actually held by VeriSign who is the registry (for .com , .net and some others) and not by the individual registrar ... when a registrar renews a domain after receiving a transfer the duration is extended from the previous expiration date

this is a useful link to see the whois data (expiration ,etc) straight from VeriSign (note: the url may seem strange but it is the official VeriSign Whois , you can navigate to that page from the homepage of VeriSign.com)

the same about expiration extensions stands for ccTLDs (country code Top Level Domains) but there might be exceptions with some of those since they are maintained individually by each country (and some might have strange rules)
