advice Transfer during grace period

I have a domain that has just expired on Godaddy. I understand that there is a 'grace period' of about 45 days in which I can still renew it, is it possible to transfer that domain to another registrar after it's expired but still within the 45 day period or will it now have to be renewed at Godaddy !?

Yes. Just make sure to keep the domain unlocked before pasting the transfer-code at the gaining-registrar. Earlier GD interface also had an option for quick transfer but I am not sure about its current status.
