Is there any tips on winning domains at auctions?

Bidding last minute, etc?

I used that on Ebay and it works. Any other tricks of the trade would be appreciated!

Like poker, don't let emotion or ego let you make bad moves.

Being the highest bidder always works for me ;)

Sometimes I like starting low (last minute) and increasing bid increments gradually (start $10-+ increments, ending in $60+) works, be aggressive. This may strike fear into the remaining bidders, leaving you with a good deal in most cases (depending on your valuation). This is the method to my madness anyway, good luck.

I guess I don't really have any tricks....I figure out what my top out budget is and I bid to try to win with some $$ remaining. Once the top out bid has been placed I simply move on...plenty of other names in the mix ;)

No emotional attachments is probably my only trick ;P

I agree with Blake, if it's not an absolute MUST-have, then just set the maximum you are willing to pay and forget about it.

Otherwise, watching an auction, you may get caught up in it, and end up paying more than you intended.

No I was specifically referring to a Godaddy auction. Sorry for not specifying. I have called Godaddy and they have given me two different answers. One guy says set your max and we will bid for you in $5 incriments and whatever you win it for is what you get it at. The other time i called the guy said if you put $1000 in to bid and say the autction is at $50, the price automatically goes to a $1000. Not sure who to believe.

I would never let Godaddy bid for me. I can tell you for a fact they have bid me up on TDNAM auctions. In one case I had won a 5k bid, they refused the transfer and still own it 5 years later.

But it doesn't really matter if you are using proxy bidding? The bid will only increase to the highest bid. It won't go up by $60+ unless someone else's proxy bid has gone up by that much also? So I'm not clear on the psychology here.

yeah i guess the proxy system gets in the way at times, this method really only works in some marketplaces while in a bidding war..if the other bidder sees your increments increase later in the auction, they generally back down.

My theory is I wait until last minute then go all in. Say the bidding is at $50 and I know my max, I lay it all out there "if" it bids in increments. I did that before and it worked. Domain name had about 7 minutes left at auction and it was at about $70 and then I threw in a bid for $750.

Make your highest bid with 2-3 minutes left in the GoDaddy auction. If it's made with less than 2 minutes left then it will be extended for another 2 minutes.

My experience is if you put a proxy bid early on in the auction it only increases the price and exposure to others if someone else bids against you.
The best way I have found to win auctions cheap is set a alarm on your phone 10 mins prior to the auction ending and put in your bid with just over 2 mins left. Do not bid your max and let proxy take over, i find that method a fast way for the price to get high.
Start fast to get the winning bid, If you get outbid by proxy add small increments to get the winning spot back.
Other then that if you get in a bidding war, make sure you have the highest price in the end.
