I got a strange email this afternoon, that looked too good to be true (The red flags went up after I received his reply)

The first email...
PHP:
Hello,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Your domain name has been found online. We are very interested in it. Please let us know your price.

This is not our main business but we make money on buying/seling domains.

This is a profitable business. Looking forward to do business with you.

Regards,
Michael E Myers
Vice President
OB Securities LLC

Here is his reply...
PHP:
Hi David!

Can you accept 12,000 USD?

Do you sell domain with a web site or just the name?

Domain without content is ok with me. Web site is not necessary. Have you had your domain names evaluated in the past?

I mean domain appraisals. Without valuation we cannot be sure in the sale price. It's very important for me in terms of reselling too. But we must engage a valuation company with REAL manual service. So I will only accept valuations from independent sources I and my partners trust.

To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal companies.

Please check this blog with suggestions from other sellers and buyers: http://domainblog.007sites.com/486935.htm

If, for example, the valuation comes higher you can adjust your asking price accordingly. It will be fair.

I also hope you can give me 12% - 15% discount. After you send me the valuation via email (usually it takes 1-2 days to obtain it) we'll continue our negotiations.

What is your preferred payment method: Escrow.com, International wire transfer, PayPal.com or something else?

Hope we can come to an agreement fast.

Looking forward to your reply.

Scary stuff out there for people who take the bait >:(

Hi, this is the widely know appraisal scam: http://www.namepros.com/warnings-and-alerts/492270-easynamesale-com-scam-phrllc-phreaker-net.html
The guy make you believe he will buy your domain name only if you do appraisal, he will refer you to fake forum where some people advice an other to buy appraisal at easynamesale.com, looks like the guy changed is website address and it is called domainexplorer.org now. Beware, it will charge you 60 euros and he won't purchase the domain name

Definitely: I got the same yesterday, and it was so obvious - only naive people could fall into such a trap - or people who are not familiar with domaining, hence the use of forums such as NP for newbies. Of course, in some cases, probably greed overcomes common sense ("12'000 $"....).

I answered politely, not showing that I knew that it was a scam, but refusing to pay for any appraisal. I then received the following reply:

It's a standard practice to show independent valuation to buyers/resellers.
Nobody will do business without it. I'm a businessman and have no intention
of changing rules which help both parties to avoid additional risks.

Of course, investors never take into account auto-generated vlauations. So
manual valuation is a "must" too.

I read the following information about appraisals at:
http://domainblog.007sites.com/486935.htm

Thank you for understanding. I'm looking forward to do business with you.

Amazing that they could quote such crude fake forum pages. But I assume it works quite a few times, otherwise people would desist.

Got the same thing today.

Thanks for this thread. My email looked like:

Hello,

My name is Jeffrey Burnstein and I'm very interested in your domain.

Investing in domains is a profitable business.

Please let me know your price for the domain in the subject line. If you
have other good names just send me the list with prices.

Looking forward to do business with you.

Regards,
Robert Paulson
President
TRS LLC

So is it Jeffrey Burnstein or Robert Paulson? Can they not afford multiple email accounts?

Thought this looked a bit odd, so searched on the domain of the email address and found this thread. I'm no domain pro, just happen to need some cash and have some domains I'd like to think are worth something. The email and their(?) GoDaddy-hosted page looked very questionable, so I don't think I would have fallen for the trap, but I was about to engage in a discussion with Jeffrey (or Robert). Now think I'll pass.

Thanks again...

These guys have been sending out this same email for years. I assume it must work on a lot of people, else they would change the wording.

Just got one now. The email read :

What is the price of your domain?

We are very interested in it. Good domains are wise investment in the
future. Our company is interested in easy-to-remember domain names.

If you have other domains for sale feel free to send your list.

Looking forward to do business with you.

Thanks for the advice though guys. I'm new to the game and might have fallen for it, but probably not after seeing some dodgy site and being asked for appraisals later on in the conversation.
Good ole NP's comes to the rescue :)

Wow, the lows these people will go to.

BEWARE of DomainExplorer.org

It seems that someone may contact you - make an offer on your domain and demand that you use this site: domainexplorer.org. This is a scam and all they are trying to do is get you to sign up for a domain appraisal. Once you do the buyer suddenly disappears and is not interested but yet you have dished out the money for a domain appraisal causing that false buyer to receive affiliate monies or commission. BEWARE of this site also: nametalk. 007sites .com/Archive/692538.htm]
and an email from this guy: [email protected]

attached is a copy of the email:

same company I think......

Good day all,

Me too !

I have just started to try and sell my domain name and website. I advertised it with a fairly reputable company ( SEDO ) , on commission, and sat back to the offers to roll in.

I see the name has changed but the tactics not !

Today I received this

Thank goodness I did a little research !

Thanks for giving exposure to this sort of conld be this sort of confidence trickery, it would be too easy to be taken in,

If I get a response to mine ( which included the price I want for my perfectly legitimate domain name and website ) I shall publish events here for all to see.
