Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Concerns about .tel

*

As many of you have figured out, I am strong supporter of .tel, and have invested in both Landrush and GA domains.

But now I feel I must slip on my "skeptical" hat because there are some issues that need to be addressed at the registrar level.

IMHO, the registrars have done a poor job of getting telhosting credentials out to customers. For domainers, this is an irksome problem, but not an impossible one. We are familiar with registrars and their sloppy ways of communicating with customers and can often figure out how to negotiate incomplete and hidden information.

However, John Q. Public, non-domainer, who has just regged a .tel domain because he has heard that he doesn't need a website, will run into an immediate snag because no one (my three registrars, at least) offers the user a step-by-step directions for setting up telhosting. Moreover, if he tries to use his registrar sign-in, forget it. It won't work, and neither Dynadot or Dotster tells you this (although once you figure out Dynadot's panel, at least you can configure your own sign-in ID and password).

Telhosting Credentials. I never did receive telhosting credentials from Dynadot. I was left to my own devices--again, manageable for those of us who are used to TWTW, but disaster for newbies who will find the whole domain thing bewildering.

Dotster did send credentials. However, Dotster decides your sign-in ID and Password, both of which look like auth codes. And after I lodged a complaint, I was told (three days later) "too bad." So what happens when I can't remember my user ID OR my password? I have printed out a copy, but, still, a user ID and password need to be intuitive to the user, while being complicated for a hacker.

Domainmonster sent nothing in way of credentials, plus they have this weird system where you must "configure" each domain individually (Dotster and Dynadot have already done this for customers). And while you're configuring domains, you don't log in (????), you just access the configure button and do each domain individually on the telhosting panel. WTF???? Now a non-domainer will have no idea what to do with that configure button, and it might even alarm him or her. Also, I suspect if you forget and reconfigure a domain with contact info already posted, you will wipe out all your inputted info, like wiping out a hard drive. Yikes!

Now your domains have been configured. Fine. Now how do you sign into your telhosing panel? Again, no guidance. I tried my Domainmonster ID and Password. Nope, didn't work. I found another purple button for .tel apps (iPhone, etc.), with one of those complicated ID/Pass combinations, but it said nothing about using it for telhosting. It just said, "These details may be required by some of the applications listed below." (Menu with Outlook, Balckberry, iPhone, and Windows apps)--Absolutely nothing about using this ID/Pass for telhosting.

Okay, so I figured it out, but what about John Q. Public, newbie? He is likely to throw up his hands and just give up. He will NOT likely fill out his contact info at all, and will just allow the domain to expire.

Another dead domain hits the dust, on its way to Snapnames, Pool, and NameJet.

To give due credit, Domainmonster is good about answering queries fast (usually within 4 hours), unlike Dynadot (whose tech support seems to have vanished into thin air) and Dotster who takes 4-5 days to answer a simple question. All registrars need to offer a telhosting FAQ page, which would take some of the burden off tech support.

My point: this lack of organization and standardization among registrars does not bode well for the TLD.

If we want newbies to adopt this no-website-required TLD, then they need to have a way of accessing telhosting easily and with clear step-by-step instuctions. For example, I notice that registrars have no problem sending out invoices, so why not send out telhosting instructions at the same time?

On their end, Telnic has done a great job of creating a simple card for display on mobile phones and PCs. In my opinion, this is a strength and the major reason I decided to invest.

However, access to the telhosting panel and telhosting management needs to be simplified and streamlined and consistent across registrars. While I can appreciate Telnic's "hands off" policy regarding how individual registrars manage their telhosting configurations, it seems to me that unless simplicity of use is not addressed, we MAY be seeing the demise of a TLD, simply because it has been advertised as as webless and hostless domain, designed for people who do not wish to pay for hosting and who want a simple and fast way to set up a contact card.

In short, this TLD is being marketed to a user who does not understand funky registrars and their on-the-fly culture (and strange TOS), so registrars need to understand this and act accordingly.

I realize that the telhosting system is currently maxed out and that glitches are a part of any new system, but from what I can see, the registrar problem is systemic and ongoing.

I'm in the process of setting up a polling/voting site that will offer some generic (and common) voting terms for lease/rent, resulting in fast results via mobile phone and websites: political, business, and entertainment projects.

I think you are going to be very disappointed to find out that .tel does not support such a thing. There is no way for you to host your polling software. You can't change the DNS to point to your own site.

The .tel system is pretty much a bare bones social site. Only instead of having each profile at www.site.com/user it's at user.tel instead.

Ms Domainer. I have been having ideas similar to your post above. Being new to this whole business, I look forward to seeing how your ideas progress. I have Elect.Tel and Choice.Tel, both of which are live, in a simple format, just to illustrate how they could be used. Any ideas or views welcome.

I do not believe this use of .tel will be accepted since, again, you can't put up your own designs. I don't see marketing departments going along with that at all.

This same exact thing could be accomplished on any other TLD with your own design.

Yes, great post, this is def a problem. For anyone not internet saavy wanting a presence on the internet, this should be addressed. I think telnic should wake up here and contact their regritrars about this. They should provide a better setup guide and put pressure on registrars to make it as easy as possible for folks to get their dot tel and set it up. If it's left up to the registrars, they probably wont do much because many are slack as ms domainer says. I had trouble setting up my dotster account myself.. had to guess my way into the setup area almost.. Hope your listening Justin!p- please dont say it's just up to the registrars to do everything, that wont help telnic sell more domains and keep them registered.

See the sample (not real phone numbers, although the website is real) I have set up at

http://fave.tel/

My card will simply use existing customer numbers and platforms, and .tel DOES support webpage, sms, phone, Skype, etc., links, which is DIRECT access once the user clicks on the individual links. Telnic has already set up the infrastructure for incorporating these kinds of communication, and my customers already have their sms and 1-900 numbers. A .tel card simply repackages and merges existing technology into a small memorable package:

[VOICEOVER:] To vote for your favorite act, Go to [Flashed across the TV screen] fave.tel.

I don't have to point anywhere except my customer's already existing web site and phone numbers.

That's the beauty of this platform.

I now occupy 7 out of 10 spots on Google for the keyword URL HotelSuites.tel

"hotel suites" is one thing.. but why would anybody search for the phrase "hotelsuites.tel" when looking for a hotel?

I can take Whatever.biz and make it #1 on Google for the exact phrase "Whatever.biz" with very little effort.

I'm not trying to be negative, I just don't understand how being listed #1 for a phrase nobody has ever heard of, or will ever use, can help you stand out from the 1000's of other hotel sites.

Maybe I am misunderstanding your claim, and excitement. Perhaps you are just happy to see the .tel extension get indexed (at all)? You are testing the waters? Trying to see how to approach SEO in the future, etc.

Do you think telnic would be able to discipline all the participating registrars? Wake up mate and stop asking for the moon.

What Im saying is that telnic should contact all their registrars and suggest they should make it as easy for people to set up their .tels as possible. If this means giving registrars better setup guides for their clients, then that would be great, I hardly think this is asking for the moon bud, Im not saying they have to be disciplined, they should at least be encouraged!

For my site, TEL is being good to be listed by Google. My hit.tel just got two pages --> kuk.tel and hit.tel

Many quote inside these pages put hit.tel to the first list of Google.

eg:
- premium hit stuffs
- thousand potential subdomains connect
- kuk hit

And many others that being on third or fourth positions. I know nobody gonna search for "kuk hit", but if I create some great subdomains. With premium keyword, just listed the second pages of Google, I would be very happy.

I'm not sure what special infrastructure you are talking about regarding this stuff. I'm not seeing any.

I took a look at the source code, and it's just a simple "callto:" tag that trigger's the cellphone or VOIP software to dial that number. You can add "click to dial" tags to any webpage. They work with phone numbers, email, Skype, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, etc... This is nothing new, and the site has nothing to do with what happens next (dialing the number, AIM launching an IM, etc...).

You could set up polling.com or whatever and have this same exact system, only on a fully customizable page.

Thanks, Bodhi.

I think it's important that we look at all aspects of .tel, the good and the bad.

In the end, I wish to see the TLD to succeed, and to do that, we have address those weak links; otherwise, .tel is likely to fade away into obscurity, and I don't want to see that happen.

:(

If MySpace starts promoting the purchase of .tel's through domainmonster, you can be sure that setting up everything will be fast and idiot-proof, otherwise it would be a nightmare.

But if I'm setting this up for mobile phone calling, I want a simple page, not something with flashing images, big banners, and youtube videos. I want my voters to be able to jump on quickly, click, and move on, not linger; my customer will want to be able to process calls and tallies as fast as possible, so that more callers can be tallied.

The TV show (or whatever people are voting on) should be the place for glitzy images and flashing lights, not the company's voting page.

Also, this little card took about 20 minutes to set up (no code required), and it took that long only because telhosting is a bit slow right now given that a lot of .tel users are setting up their contact info all at one time.

I cannot agree more with Ms Domainer in regards to the teething problems. My .tels just in the past few minutes actually started to work. I bought on the first open date, set up my account immediately after purchase, activated etc etc. Days later they finally start working. And this is supposed to be easy for the total non-techie type to understand and use... I bought to test them out, I'm curious, but if I bought these without knowing anything about the business I would have asked for my money back after three days of getting no results - let alone five days!

I'm giving .tel a chance but so far I am less than impressed.

In all fairness, everything you mentioned could be done with any extension and probably made more efficient by actually having the ability to dev the site the way you want it.

However, this is the .tel "Showcase" thread. So lets move the discussion to the .tel discussion thread.

What you are describing needs to go on it's own page with a design optimized for voting, on it's own host on it's own .com, .net or .whatever. This goes too far beyond what .tel is meant for.

You say that images, banners and videos shouldn't be on voting pages, but the laws of marketing say otherwise. You just do a redirect for mobile users so that they aren't hit with as much.

It sounds to me like you are concerned about having a template that is easy to update on your end. You should't have any problem pulling this off on an actual website. Any designer can do this for you along with the same "click to dial" links and admin page. Very easy stuff. Trust me.
