.mobi .tel the mobi killer?

I just found this while reading the mobi wikipedia page. Aren't owners of mobi alarmed that another extension that's shorter going to be released? Won't this greatly reduce the value of mobi domains? .tel is short and very easy.

.tel = 5 button pushes
.mobi = 9 button pushes

If I am on my cellular telephone I may think .tel before .mobi. The backers of .mobi are mainly cellphone manufacturers and providers.

Also it doesn't appear that .tel will have the content restrictions that .mobi imposes. Some may view this as a strength but as phones and browsers become MORE intuitive I think it's a weakness.

I personally am now very excited about .tel and it's possibilities. With mobi I grabbed 3 names...I might grab 20 for .tel. Even domains like ins.tel are VERY cool.

I do not think .tel will overtake .mobi. I think when people think mobile phone, then think mobi. Not tel.

.Tel won't allow for numerics to be registered. That's pretty disappointing..

I agree, I think if anything .tel would be the equivalent to .net compared to .com. It could go the other way though, its still too early to "tel" :hehe:

If any of these extensions reign supreme in the mobile world, the other will just have to follow. Once the mobile internet explodes (and it will) there will be plenty of room for multiple extensions tailored to the mobile community.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, they are climbing right into .MOBI's turf.

First in has an advantage, one point for .MOBI. It remains to be seen how well the .TEL people handle their rollout and promotion.

It would be nice if the extension is .mp .hp
.mp - mobilephone
.hp - handphone
Anyway, .tel sounds great as well...thanks

says in their faq that .tel will not:

Overlap or conflict with any existing top-level domain and their value-chains.

This is what gives it BETTER value than .mobi. Mobi is attempting to create a new standard which many don't believe will work. .tel is imho sexy while mobi sounds silly.

I do not think a dot-tel page will be anything more than somekind of software based contact record for the voip. Perhaps it's more like a text phone book page only viewable with special software and not a fully functional website? If so, it will be no competition for mobi, com, ect. I bet dot-tel will have compliance checks like dotmobi keeping it controled for the intended use of tele hook-ups only.

From: http://www.telnic.org/faq.html

How will people access the .Tel?

Customers of the .Tel sTLD will store their contact details in the delegated domain space in the form of NAPTR records, which can be accessed by client software tailored to use these. Telnic intends to release such open source client software for Windows, Macintosh and Mobile phones, whilst a web browser proxy service will be available for registrants who wish to use this, making minimal .Tel functionality available to anyone with a web browser.

I like the idea of replacing my phone number with a domain, people can type the domain into their phones (instead of the phone #) and make a call using voip (instead of the GSM network).

This should be used as a phone-to-phone communication protocol instead of a phone-based web browsing protocol (as .mobi). If so, there's a bright future for mobile devices in the next years.

How cool is to say call me at shopperx.tel? :)

If I understand this correctly, then it would seem then that .tel is not so much threat to .mobi as it is to current telephone companies resisting the move to voip telephony.

I would rather be known and reached via telephone from anywhere in the world as mobidick.tel than 011-82-453-992-0000... it's kind of like doing away with the phone number and just using a unique callerid, which can be meaningful if so desired.

some advantages I see:

-first, it's meaningful and memorable
-second it could go with me anywhere
-third it wouldn't come under the control of my local tel co
-fourth I could have numerous .tel to assign for various purposes and for filtering
-fifth I could make a business of selling/leasing these names or at least pass them on to whomever I wish, which I can't do with my current tel number.
-sixth the same .tel address could be used for voice messaging as well as email.

It might take some getting used to not knowing where in the world someone is calling from, if it's from overseas or from the same neighborhood.

it also seems that this scheme offers increased anonymity, which might present challenges to law enforcement folks trying to track down the bad guys, who can set up unlimited .tel addresses from any registrar around the world out of reach of the authorities?

Will we be able to associate any images or text descriptions, etc. with .tel?

My guess is pretty soon. If it was approved by ICANN the same time as mobi was, then it cant be to far away.

The .tel extension? Has not even been released yet?

Any mobile related extension must have teenagers backing (hype or liking) behind it.

Mobi is cool while .tel is so old fashioned. Ask a group of 10 tenagers and you will find the answer. Isn't it easier to just call than typing an extension at the end? If you are using .tel for anything other than calling then what is the purpose or point of .tel anyway?

I rather spend that money on .org or .us kind of domains than buying .tel as those extensions are on the upswing.

Of course its my opinion and I can differ with you.

I understand what your saying. I just dont think that the TLD is dated yet. You will see that their will be many high profiel sales for the .tel extension once it is releases.

I wish good luck to people who invest in .tel

They have every right to make a great decision/investment for them.

All I am saying is:

Its your money - invest it wisely.
