Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Sorry if this has been answered within the 91 pages of this thread...but does anyone know if you can setup an email account with .tel? For example, [email protected]

According to http://telnic.org/community-faq.html

You can add a MX record to support email functionality. You cannot do it from the control panel itself. According to Telnic, "To put a MX record into a .tel domain, contact your service provider."

Each .tel domain has a fixed layout page.

At the moment you can only add contact information, but as time moves forward, I am sure the extension will evolve to take on new ideas and technologies.
thanks for explanation. repped+

I wish there were more control on the developer's side.

At the moment I have questions I haven't found answers to yet: How can I track visitors, calculate traffic stats?
How can I place graphics there?
I do not understand the advantages of the complete refusal from hosting possibility. How can I monetize the domains at the current techical stage of .tels?

I own 2 .tels so there's no irony in my questions.

If one can get more control (developer's side), imagine what could be accomplished with this extension :)

Only way I know of monetizing thus far is to lease a sub-folder with someones contact information. Not sure about the state of traffic stats or graphic placement though :(

Thank you both for the suggestions for my monkey.

here is my small regional .tel setup:
Painesville.tel
>Businesses
>Schools
>Services
>People
>Websites

I think it is setup like most online directories.

@ZandyMan. who is your registrar? Name has it right under the option to administrate your dot tel.

Thanks again. IMO storing contact data only depends on the end-users, the concept is good. Think that they may buy the ad place if they like the website, its traffic.....BUT at the current stage I do not see how to achieve this love with these restrictions of .tel in the era of web2.0. That's why I'm asking.

Many people are purchasing these names based on keywords. With the purpose of this extension based towards contact information, I can't see much of these keywords succeeding.

On the flip-side, those with strong keywords relevant towards contact information I see them succeeding, and thus might I say, profiting? Whether the ROI is within 6 months or 1+ years, some will do well.

On the far side of the spectrum, though, ROI could be outstanding within the extensions first 6 months perhaps due to hype. Unfortunately, that could be the only profiting taking place.

When doing any investing, it's always best to consider both sides :).

Peeps keep talking about monitzing .tel names...it's NOT that type of vehicle.

The way anyone will monitize is to somehow get it in front of a prospective customer who then contacts you and you close a deal.

One cannot place ads on .tel. The only ROI I can envision is selling the .tel amidst its hype or leasing a sub-folder to some sort of client. I believe at this point there are people who know exactly what they are getting into and others that don't.

There is one other option that I can see they way .tel is set up and that is to have links to websites that you can actually monetize. If .tel ever takes off, strong keyword names may be able to profit from that approach. I'm a big skeptic on the extension. Of course that won't stop me from throwing a little money at it. :hehe: When you are betting a long shot it does not take a huge investment to get a decent payout if by some miracle the long shot is a winner. :yell:

It worked for me with .mobi, will it work with .tel, only time will .tel

Please Help!

Please help if you can....

I have NorthAmerica.tel

It shows up as northamerica.tel

I was told to delete all of my sub-directories which I had created and that I would be able to re-enter the heading North-America.tel, which would then solve my problem, as the hyphen dissappears.

Well, I deleted all of the sub folders I had created and now.... NOTHING! I am still unable to change the appearance of northamerica.tel...

Any ideas????

No ideas, but I think this is an important issue. All the .tel sites I have visited show the name in all lowercase with no space. Not very pretty to look at.

sidenote: I like the northamerica.tel reg, now just don't forget about all the other countries in North America http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America They are going to get jealous if you only include Canada and the USA :)

I've already heard from a few people who say they didn't realize you can't develop .tel's until after they have spent 100's. I guess thats the cost of not doing your homework. .tel investors better hope that .tel markets the hell out of it otherwise, they stand little chance to rent space on a domain that gets no traffic. I can't see google giving .tel good rankings either as google hates people selling links and if that were to happen .tel domains would basically become link farms. It seems .tel's only real avenue is something to put on a business card. Instead of printing the office phone/mobile/fax/ect they can just have business.tel and all of the information there.

TelOdex.com may become a winner. Other than something along those lines plus some given names and/or myspace monikers I see no real money making opportunities. I even passed reg'ing my surname and my most commonly used internet 'handle'. With that said I hope I am wrong and y'all make some bucks.

The term due diligence comes to mind here. You really can't feel bad for people that didn't do their homework.
