The next big feeding frenzy?

I buried this in another thread somewhere and didn't get much response. I'm sure there was a time when people thought LLL.us were worthless (some still do, but they're fetching decent prices when they drop). All of LLL.com, LLL.net, LLL.us, LLL.biz, LLL.info and LLL.org are taken. All of NNNN.com is taken and NNN in pretty much every major global TLD is taken.

What do you think the next to go will be? It seems LLLL.com is close behind and is pretty much done if you don't like the least popular letters. Others could be:

- NNNN.us or NNNNN.us (zip codes).
- LLL.in
- LLLL.us
- Is all LLL.eu taken? I can't reg them so didnt check.
- NNN.in
- ???.ca

If you were to start collecting these 'sequence' domains in a TLD that isn't already fully registered today, which would you take and why? I've registered a few LLL.in lately and some NNNN.us, but only those with meaning (1225.us for example - christmas).

Looking forward to hearing what others think. Thanks!

I think you could certainly have some potential with the local zip code domains - particularly the .us extension. As we are witnessing in other areas of the domain industry, there is a trend towards the more "local" TLDs and I am a firm believer that this trend will continue. The zipcode could make a great resource for a local website that lists businesses and such in the more popular areas.

We may see the day where LLLL.us takes off, but I think that's on down the road unless you're talking good four letter words.

LLL.ca and NNN.ca certainly have great potential as well.

I just wonder if these country code domains will be worth anything with LLL domains. I mean there are literally tons of cctlds lying around and even at cheap prices they're not moving ( .at for instance )

Speaking of 'feeding frenzy', I've noticed the past couple of weeks that the LLLL.coms (that dont contain q,x,z,y) have been averaging around $20 on TDNAM and Club Drop expired auctions.

I think the problem with NNNN.us is that .us really doesn't have mindshare with anyone. I have some pretty good .us keywords and they get almost no type in traffic (which is ok, I bought them for development anyway). Hopefully as companies start to use the extension this will change, but it's probably going to take a while. NNN.us is 90%+ owned by domainers, not users.

I agree re: zip code domains, but not only .us .. consider .info as well for real estate info in particular zip code areas, etc.

zip codes in both formats NNNNN.us and NNNNN-NNNN.us are both reserved strings in the .us TLD. So are phone numbers like NNN-NNN-NNNN.us. Reserved for future use.

A lot of pricing is due to suppy and demand. Make your own decision after looking at this list of possible combinations where N is number, L is letter and C is character:

NNN = 1,000 (10 x 10 x 10)
LLL = 17,576 (26 x 26 x 26)
CCC = 47,952 (36 x 37 x 36) hyphen possible in middle slot

NNNN = 10,000 (10 x 10 x 10 x 10)
LLLL = 456,976 (26 x 26 x 26 x 26)
CCCC = 1,774,224 (36 x 37 x 37 x 36)

NNNNN = 100,000

Now muliply these by just the number of gTLD's and popular ccTLD's and you have some whopping big numbers.

The numbers rise exponentially, so the rarity will not, unless you happen to find the rare person that NEEDS that specific combination. If I were speculating on 4-5 number or 4 characters, I would try to find some strings that could have meaning. For numbers, maybe phone stings or popular zip codes. For letters, maybe ones that end in "I" for Inc. or "CO" for Company.
