question The domain name of a website that I liked has expired…but it was Russian, and I don't have a Russian credit card.

Exactly what it says on the tin, basically. There's a website that I really liked that's been abandoned for a few years now, and just yesterday, I tried accessing it to find the (reg.ru) domain name had expired.

The website in question had literally THOUSANDS of pictures of an actor that I like, so, impulsively, I tried paying the fee myself. But then it just showed an error page, and I later learned that international cards aren’t accepted.

What should I do? I'm terrified of this site becoming lost, to the extent that I'm willing to spend money on it myself. I couldn’t really find any contact information for the (former) owner, either, and the Wayback Machine has only a small amount of the site's many files.

Buying the domain won’t bring the site back.

I get that. But it was functional until only a day or two ago. And it still shows up on Google searches.

To clarify, is the problem a payment issue or an issue connecting with the owner?

Unfortunately, no, I didn’t get a chance.

But in all seriousness, I have been trying to be cautious.

Both. The site hasn’t been updated for a few years, but it was fully functional until only a day or two ago. I have no idea how to contact the owner.

The site and some of its contents still show up on Google, but trying to go there now shows a screen reading (machine translated)

“The domain registration period has expired.

An extension is required to resume operation of the domain and its services.”

If the domain isn’t listed for sale anywhere, your best move is to ask the registrar to forward your message to the owner. One attempt usually isn’t enough, so it helps to try multiple times.

If none of that works, your fallback is to wait for the domain to drop and try to catch it the moment it’s deleted. At that point, it’s all luck and timing.

And I’m sorry you’re dealing with this situation, it’s always tough when a site you care about is at risk of disappearing.

Again, getting the name won’t get you the site back.

I'd try that…but the problem is, as I said, *everything* (including the registrar) is Russian. I don’t speak Russian. I don't know what the hell to do in a situation like this.

I'm not saying that it *will*…but the site doesn’t appear to be outright GONE yet. It's just stuck behind a paywall (requiring a Russian credit card…which I also don't have) until someone pays to extend it another year.

And thank you for your concern, by the way. Yeah, it certainly isn’t nice. I just woke up yesterday morning, tried to find some specific images of that actor with an costar…and here I am now.
