Most of you all are veterens here. I'm a noob obviously as I ask this question. I've only owned four domain names total and two I developed into websites. I recently sold my first (tournamentspecialist.com) to a member of this forum and tlbbet.com is another website I've 50% developed (haven't had time to finish).

I need to know where to look and how to look for the names. I know you are not gonna grab 5 digit domains right off the bat but I'm looking to develop and hold a large profile of domains. I'm aiming to own 20 by end of May, 50 by end of July, and eventually get to 150+ by end of 2006. I know thats attainable but I want quality over quantity.

Anyone got time to help out a newbie?

PS I'll be browsing the forums alot for the next few weeks to get acclimated to this forum.

Best way to start is in learning. Simply reading through this forum is a great start and will put you streets ahead of any newbie.

Here are a couple of suggestions in getting decent names:

1. avoid made-up names; try to target 'keyword' domains - that means, domain with words that are commonly searched for. There are several online tools that can help. Popular tools domainers use are whois.sc & inventory.overture.com

2. keep an eye out on expiring domains - some can be pretty good especially those expiring with ranks, traffic & links.

Check out DNJournal.com and www.namefaqs.com for a good place to start :)
That, and hang out in chat and just watch/listen, as well as spend hours pouring over these boards, but realize that opinions can be dated and opinions are like booties ;) .

And stay away from Trademarked names from companies and such.
Think end user potential, someone that fits the domain just perfectly regarding their business activities.

I was looking at all these auctions in the forum and I see so many LLLL.com domains for sale. How can people possibly know which ones are good and which are not?

Also can someone maybe tell me a great book to get started out with?

Watch out if you reg a lot of names close to each other. In a years time you will have a lot of renewal fees to pay.
