We all know that buying domains is the easy part. The hard bit is selling them to the right end user at a desired price.
We all hear about average domains sell For 5 figures. The question is how.
A name like takethechance.com which sold for 15k by Mike Mann which is amazing.
But who would you reach out to with a name like this and how, I've tried linked in, to know avail, searched via Whois, which most of the time I'm faced with a privacy, or a BLANK email address.
I have some pretty decent names, but feel stuck with them. Ive seen dropped names on godaddy auctions sell for thousands, but if I try to list a similar or better name, it doesn't seem to get a look in.
Am I missing a trick here?

When I want to sell an average-sounding domain name at a super-inflated price, I usually make a deal with one of the Dark Overlords of the Universe. They can generally get your domain(s) sold quickly, and their commission is pretty reasonable.

Though you do have to put your soul up for collateral, which is a little unnerving...

Obviously, as anyone who would voluntarily spend their time here. Unlike those who got foreclosed on by the Darklords of the Universe, and spend eternity perusing the posts at Namepros, hoping to sell a .co. For after they sell a .co they shall be released from their hellish prison and allowed to rest. But alas, no one will ever buy a .co.

The moral of the story: don't make deals with the Darklords of the Universe.

You have two options.

#1 - Sit back and let inquiries come in, and when they do quote them a high price.
#2 - Do lead research and find a buyer for a reasonable price.

It sounds like you need some info on how to do end user research, just keep reading the forums and start today - eventually you will get the process. Best of luck.

I think that the main component of getting huge sales for mediocre domains is that you have to give up making a couple hundred sales at reasonable prices by demanding outrageous prices and refusing to relent even if you have to take a year to complete the negotiations.

The most important thing is to contact the right person at the company, the decision maker..

Check the company exec team on their website, Google, Bloomberg, yahoo finance etc and find someone who can make the call on whether to buy the name (ie the business development manager)

Using the WHOIS often just gets someone who will delete the email and cant make the decision

Unfortunately, most of the time it doesn't work. You see those 7-figure asking prices for domains on ebay, they will never sell because they are crap...

The big domainers get top dollars for their domains because:
a. they have good inventory (not all their names of course)
b. they have volume
c. they have cash flow and they can afford to hold for the best offer

But the little domainers cannot afford to turn down offers and make no sales, they need cash to keep the machine moving... You just can't compare a small-time domainer with a well-funded business venture. It doesn't make sense to try to mimic R Schwarz or Schilling, when your situation and financials status is completely different.

The best way to sell:
Buy great domains, sit and wait for unsolicited offers. The quality of the inventory is what matters most. The sales skills and luck play a part too, but a marginal one.

The OP says:

Yes, buying domains is the easy part. Everybody can do it. What is hard though, is to buy good domains that will attract end users.

It's in large part a numbers game. When you own tens of thousands of domains, you will from time to time have buyers with money to burn who really want your mediocre domains.

It's no magic to it, its just recognizing that there is no science to domain appraisal. It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
