Something Weird About Name.com Expired Auctions

I don't know if anybody has experienced this before but this is my first time I would see it happen at Name.com expired auctions.

I found a domain name at Name.com expired auctions via Expireddomains.net, which I really liked. I clicked to purchase it but it says not available. On seeing this, it look strange to me because if it was not available, there is no way it will be on the list at Expireddomains.net.

I checked whois to know if it has been renewed by previous owner and nothing of that sort. I checked if it was in the name of a new owner with new updated date and again, nothing of that sort.

Then I decided to visit the domain name directly and there it was... showing it still had some days to go with new price to purchase it at name.com and at this stage, it had reduced to $19.9

I proceeded to purchase the name and at last checkout point, my payment failed. I tried credit card and tried paypal but none worked.

It was at this point that i decided to contact the customer care department and I was told that the name has been back ordered which is why my payment failed. I was made to understand that backorder is first come, first served.

Oh cool... I decided to move on.

According to expireddomains.net end date for the domain name, it was supposed to end on 21st of this month. Today is 28th and I can tell you right now, the domain name is showing redemption period. No new owner has showed up on it

My question is, why hasn't the domain name been given to the person that back ordered it, even on 28th of this month? I thought Name.com expired auction purchases were instant, so what is holding the name from being recorded in the name of the person that back ordered it?

I also sent an email asking this same question but I have not gotten any reply from Name.com to this day.

Does anybody have an explanation for this revelation? Have you experienced it before?

I just got a reply from Name.com as shown below

I apologize for the delay in response. A domain is only available on the Expired Domain list for a short period of time. No one was able to scoop up the domain and is currently in Redemption. Once it is deleted from the registry and made available to the general public, you can try to register it.

I tried many times to purchase this domain name and it failed but here they are saying no one was able to scoop the domain name. This is the most unbelievable thing I have seen in domain industry.

cc @AbdulBasit.com you know the name bro.

Name.com's expired domains have been going to GoDaddy for about 2 months or so.

Before that they went to NameJet. Only the leftovers that didn't get pick up at NameJet could be bought through Name.com's expired domain system, after going through NameJet without getting picked up. So hardly any good names would become available at name.com, as the good ones would get bought at the NameJet stage.

If name.com domains don't get bids in the GD auction they go to closeouts. I still see that there are some expired name.com domains for sale at name.com as well though. I don't know at what stage of the expiration they show up at name.com, but I assume it's after bidders have had a chance to buy them at GoDaddy. Or maybe they reserve a small pool of names to be sold through name.com instead of going to GD? I haven't looked into that so I don't know their exact arrangement.

Thanks but they should have at least made it possible to be sold on name.com as well. My worry now is that if I try to back order it, the likes of huge domains will not let me have it.

I will try nonetheless.
