.mobi Some people just make me laugh!

So I just visited the "other domain name forum" and saw much of the same opinions that I saw here, basically .mobi names not related to mobile devices are pointless. Makes me laugh because the .mobi as an extension is either going to take off or not. If it doens't take off it doens't matter how "mobile" orientated you domain is. If it does take off then well... .mobi has taken off and if you have good names, you will see traffic. It's not like people are going to look at their phones and think "oh I can only look at the web on my phone for mobile stuff, sure can't look at it like I would at home, even though I'm really bored right now and surfing the web would be fun, gee I better wait till I get home to my pc a few hours from now".

Anyone else feeling me on this?

I agree partly.
200k for flowers(.)mobi is going to take a long long time to recover that value.
In my opinion their was no need to introduce yet another TLD, they only had to incorporate some header-standards that would have served the mobile community whatever the extension,if a certain mobile device is detected just divert to the appropriate content,If the content wasn't upto the header-standard the content simply wouldn't show, at all, that would have done the job in my opinion.

For around 5 years mobile devices will only be used mainly for quick surfing fixes, like collecting email, stock prices, games etc etc.

It wouldn't surprise me if they have seperate country LD's .mobi's lined up already, just to squeeze a bit more out of the domain industry.

Mobi's will take off, but in a very long time.

Kind Regards,
GD.

I agree that it will take some 4-5 years for .mobi's too take off, so do be prepared to have to renew in 2008 and longer before you start seeing some real value.
That's also considering that they dont drop the ball and let this ext flop. But considering the big coporate names involved hopefully they wont let that happen.

I think you have some good points but I think your time frame is off by a few years. Mobile web surfing is already huge in Asia, it just hasn't caught on here yet. My feeling is that the pricing in the US is just to high and there are not enough sites designed for mobile devices.

I agree that .mobi was not necessary if all the .com sites would make a mobile version of their site, but that is just not happening. The .mobi was created "imho" to get the US and western users sped up to where Japan and Asia is at in terms of mobile surfing. The Japanese are not using their mobile devices just for "quick surfing fixes, like collecting email, stock prices, games etc etc." they are using their mobile devices to surf the web the same way, or similar to, the way they would at home. As always we lag behind them in technology, but I see no reason why Americans won't surf the web on their mobile devices the way people already do in Asian countries.

If the idea for .MOBI was based only on the idea that mobile users would use it almost exclusively to search for such terms as maps, weather, tides, surf reports,stock-markets,news,sports-results, hotels,taxi's,travel-services,music,ringtones,games and a few others I might have left out, then IMHO the big money backers such as Microsoft,Samsung,Vodaphone and Nokia would not have seen such a big market in it as they have. In fact the whole idea behind .Mobi is to give users the assurance that the .mobi site they visit will guarantee them fast and mobile compliant websites. Now if those mobi investors thought that only the abovementioned themes would be visited they would not have seen the need for .mobi as those themes have been available in many forms for a long time already on many walled garden type sites in a mobile friendly form. No the vision must obviously be for sites covering the same spectrum of topics as on a home pc to be visited by mobile surfers.

just for your information. I create a test site for smsnews.mobi and I got about 10-15 visitors per day.

Aboutdomains.

I want mobi to succeed and I visited your site and like it alot but I wanted to know. Is that traffic coming because you have posted your site on message boards, or is that all natural traffic from the net?

If it's natural and by itself then that makes me very anxious.

You may add some news on your site to attract more visitors :)

exactly.

I don't see the mobile aspect as a limitation to only do travel and phone related things. I see mobile as a new way to do the same things people have been doing. (Just not sitting in their underwear). Now we have a bunch of new markets or markets that have a whole new meaning and new life. I plan on using my mobi for everything I do when I'm not at home or when I can't get the kids off the computer at home. I would expect and hope to see some new devices to help enhance the mobi usage. Like bluetooth tv's for cars and hotels or publicly accessable link up stations where you can work on larger screens and keybords. I have way too many dotmobi's and it's a 50/50 split on the proposed content of the sites. Dotmobi is only limited by what you want to do with it(and TODAY's technology like everything else)

Laughing?

If those people didn't laugh at .mobi then there would have been hardly anything available for us to register. All it woulda took was one millionaire on the 26th to register everything .

Is it true that there is sometimes a fine line between love and hate?

Love to love.

Regards,

I'm hoping that we will be able to do MLS searches ove .mobi. I talked with a guy that said .mobi doesn't support 'tables' so a IDX feed might not work.
