Sold my name a year ago, and now it's a movie. Have you sold any movie domains?

Last year I was contacted by the director of "Another Earth" and I sold him my domain name AnotherEarth.com.

I just think it's so cool that I came up with a hand reg.. from and idea I had, and was able to flip it for a decent profit, and be a small part of something larger.

The movie is about a duplicate planet in our solar system and a young student and composer. It's not quite the angle I was thinking about when I reg'd the name but it is great and you should watch the movie. Just search for it.

Anyway, I just thought it was cool and wanted to share.

Has anyone else sold any movie domains?

Not at all. When I was negotiating with them they let me know what it was for and I felt I got a fair price. Plus I was just excited to sort of, in a way, helped to name a movie.. Pretty cool.

Congrats, cool for them too that they have an exact match domain for their film, not some long thing like *film or *movie.

No, I have never sold a film domain, but afaik I have never owned one.

I nearly registered balibo.com (posted in my lists of available domain names). Some time later it changed hands, a movie by that name was released :)
I know that it sold on Sedo, price unknown.

I sold one once to a big studio for $500. Didn't know it was a big studio buying it (although I suspected). I just checked the whois. They must have let it drop, because it's owned by somebody else now.

No, but a Game Domain, which became a quite famous PC/PS3/XBOX Game. I sold it for just low x.xxx. Probably could have get more...

One of my very first sales was a domain made into a short movie for an independnt movie festival. Not the greatest flick I've ever seen, but it was a thrill, nonetheless.

You can still see it at http://www.adultbehavior.com

i actually own a name now - developed as well (PR3) - that is about to be the name of a movie.

I found out through my daily updates using google alerts, which is set up to notify me if my site name is used anywhere.

it looks like it is a small indie label - however they are going with a Facebook page to market to fans from what i see.

filming has only just begun, so maybe an offer awaits - although, i can't say i'm expecting this :)

Congrats coming up with the domain and selling it. The movie was independently produced and I think that a major studio picked it up and will be showing in theaters nation wide. Are you happy with the price they gave you for your domain?

Congrats for coming up with a great domain and successfully selling it. The movie was independently produced and I think that a major studio picked it up and will be showing in theaters nation wide. Are you happy with the price they gave you for your domain?

Congrats!! :tu:

I own a movie name.

I never came up with the name... It's a dictionary term, about 100,000 exact match gms currently and growing. Many books and movies have this as their title. I bought it at auction... 15 year old .net

Have it for two years now. It wasn't cheap, but safe to say, interest in the name is there and offers are waay above what I paid for it... I don't need the money, so I will hang on to it.

Regards,

Man I hope you didn't blow away an opportunity of a life time. I hope it was cool the way that Rick Schawrts would have considered it to be cool like he got 750k from CNN selling iReport.com now that's real cool :tri:

When the original "Happy Feet" movie came out, I reg'd HappierFeet dot-com, 'cause you never know what a sequel might get called.

You have probably seen that the sequel is out now, but it's just called "Happy Feet Two". Years ago, however, HappierFeet dot-com surprisingly sold on Sedo for low $x,xxx. Turned out Dow Chemical bought it from me to promote some substance that made shoes more comfortable. :) Since then, it apparently dropped and then got re-reg'd this year.

I posted a couple dozen available movie names on my old Bannen's Best available dot.com's list a few years ago, but they were names of movies already out. Most of them were regged from my list, don't remember them all but aManCalledHorse.com and BillyBathgate.com come to mind. They were grabbed by domainers.

I owned ColdBloodedMurder.com but let it drop a year ago, which I regret, as I think it's just a matter of time before some TV or movie studio makes this common phrase into a crime series or movie :)

An interesting slightly-related story that worked the other way: I used to write/draw/publish a b&w indie comic book back in the '80's called Icon Devil; for the last 7 years or more IconDevil.com's been regged (I think it was by BuyDomains) with a hefty price tag on it. They finally let it expire earlier this year so I grabbed it. Don't know if I have any plans for it ever, but what the heck: come home to Poppa.
