I'd like to get some appraisals from the members of this forum on the name
Social.com

This is the 6 letter dictionary word.

Some history on the name:

I registered the name in 1995. In that year, I was using the name for a web site I called the Social Cafe. The Social Cafe was Cool Site of the Day on Jun 22, 1995 :)

In October of 2006 the name was out of my possession for a couple weeks until my Registrar at the time, Namesecure, was able to recover it. It is now at Moniker and I intend to put it up for auction in early 2007.

Your kind opinoins are appreciated!

even with a quick sale you can get 6 digits, with a bit of time and knocking on the right doors at least 7 digits.
indeed a very powerfull and easy word to remember.
social means the same in several languages therefor increases it's value.

the real question is.... will you invest or spend the money?
lol :)

good luck with the future sale

I don't see how you can say 7 figures is a bit high. Look at the social networking industry it has exploded. If you plan to sell I would consider finding a way to contact myspace or facebook as mentioned above. I can tell you without a doubt I don't think there is one board member here who wouldn't love to have that domain name. Best of luck to you in development or sales.

So we all know the story of Vodka.com. Purely generic word.

With all that knowledge aside, what would this formula have valued it?

Take into consideration that perhaps two months ago, when it was not in the news, what the traffic might have been then. I am sure the traffic has jumped significantly since it became such a newsworthy sale.

Wasn't expecting criticism... all it is is an estimate... and did you even read "neglecting traffic/revenue stats"?

:notme:Whoa...not criticizing here...simply a curiosity and a serious inquiry.

How does the formula used size up Vodka.com?

Best market for Social.com?

First I'd like to thank all of you for your thoughtful posts and words of support! I can see that this is a very experienced and professional community here.

I was wondering what people thought might be my strongest market for selling Social.com? I've considered Social Networking, Social Media, Social Security, Dating and Social Issues/Politics.

If anyone is interested in participating in an auction of Social.com, please visit www.social.com and drop me a line using the contact info there.

Thanks,

Social Networking. That is IT right now. Don't even think about marketing it for any other use.

Not really a fair comparison. There was over six months of hard negotiations on that one with some unique circumstances and a seller determined to get the price he wanted despite what the name would have appraised for.

chulium's valuation is probably not far off from what it would sell to a reseller or in a domain auction sales setting like TRAFFIC. Like I said before -- it's really impossible to speculate what the price will be without knowing the circumstances. Perhaps the owner is in a situation where $350k now would mean a lot more than the chance at $2 million five years from now. How would you valuate the name then?

Throw it up on ebay right now with the $.20 listing special (only good for about 30 more minutes though) a Featured Item upgrade, a $1,000,000 price tag and select allow offers. Make sure you put a minimum offer though. Should run you about $30 for some good exposure.

To develop or not to develop?

DomainBloggy said:
Social is the new buzz... if you really need money then this is the right time to sell your domain but if you want it to be more valuable then get a biz plan, good concept, get some investors, develop it and create your own buzz about it ...

I did consider the latter approach, but my I have my doubts.

What if you develop a good site with good traffic, but the site isn't what a particular buyer is interested in? Wouldn't an enduser prefer to start with a clean slate, developing their own ideas?

Suppose I develop a moderately successful social networking site, but the look and feel isn't in line with a buyer's own tastes?

Apart from these considerations, picking the right concept, getting funding and executing are not easy things to accomplish :)

This is truly a great domain. The way things are right now on the web I have to say that this should be one of the most desirable names on the market, if not the most desirable. The right buyer will pay millions for sure. If I owned this name I would not sell for less than $1.5 million... I think the right buyer would not scoff at $5 million... A sale like that would likely take a long time and a lot of negotiating etc... But in the meantime you can make a lot of extra cash by either parking or developing this awesome name.

Good luck!!

P.S. - Don't worry about what your personal developed site might look like. (If you decide to develop) The domain will sell this one, not the content or design that you come up with. I suggested development or parking for the meantime to make yourself some extra $$... Whoever buys this would have a clear idea and lots of marketing dollars so they would wipe out the memories of your site pretty fast and establish their own identity...

awesome domain i was sitting thinking how i would feel if i owned this domain it would be like winning the lotto and just not cashing in your ticket to freedom lol
as far as the issue a few threds above concerning the 6 figures i think the only person that feels that way is a lepfrog. In my opinion i will see this as one of the best domains sold in 2008 or mabye even 2007

I am not expert in appraising or domaing, but I think Someone in the onlinedating industry will want that and will probably buck up for it IMHO. If you sell get the maximum exposure of it.

I personally think it's a little past its prime time to sell (there's not as much MySpace hype as there used to be), but you could still get a few million dollars for it if you play your cards right. I would say approach all the net behemoths that don't already own a social networking site and pitch it to them. Approaching Myspace is practically pointless...the traffic may be worth something to them, but they haven't exactly had problems getting traffic to their site. A large company wanting to START a social networking site is what you really should be seeking. Good luck!

It's not about professionalism. It's about exposure. An appraisal thread on namepros while I admit is some exposure you're not going to have people from hundreds of webmaster boards linking to it and watching it. The objective is to get it out there. Despite what most may think you can't sell something unless you stick it in the buyers face. Besides where's this professional marketplace? lol
