After a dramatic story of theft and retrieval of perhaps one of the most desirable domain names ever, it is now up for sale and expected to attract substantial bids.

The word “social” generates hundreds of millions of results in a Google search and is perhaps the most widely used word on the internet today. Social.com, which went up for sale on March, 21, for the first time since its initial registration in 1995, is estimated to fetch a seven to eight figure sum because it’s short, easy to remember, generic and an internationally recognised word.

"Since announcing that Social.com would go on sale, I have seen strong interest from social networking companies, venture capital firms and some Fortune 500 companies,” said site owner Scott Carter, President of Guided Tour Software, Inc.

A blog, currently parked on Social.com, provides further information on the sale, and features a “current high offer” counter that, at the time of writing, stands at $25,000.


The site is being sold via sedo.com, who suggest various uses of the site such as social networking, social media portal, dating, social marketing, social investing, social security and social issues/politics.

We will see but "social" only returns 21,688 in overture. Social security websites take up a big piece of the 600 million Google hits.

Nice domain name but 7 figures might be a big reach unless Friendster and MySpace get into a bidding war for more eyeballs.

Agreed, this is a testable hypothesis. We have data people, so don't make claims that are so easily refutable.

It would be interesting to see if Microsoft will get involved for some additional exposure for their Welcome to the Social campaign for Zune. The publicity would pay for the domain name itself. IMHO.

I hope the seller has a good reserve as I recently got badly bitten by listening to the "broker" and had a premium cctld name go for peanuts. Not happy but then I should have followed my own thoughts instead of being led.

Not realy convinced that Sedo is the place for domain auctions yet, they have far too much dross included on the boards - needs a big clean up!

So ... it's not an auction now, just a regular Sedo listing, and the social.com website says that offers must be at least seven figures.
