Hot on the heels of the ascent of its .icu domain extension to the number one in registry market share, comes the announcement this week from ShortDot SA that it will introduce yet another new domain name to the public. .cyou (See You) is anticipated to be available to the general public by June.

... “Our users tend to shy away from traditional ways and instead seek out innovation and originality. We knew that while .icu and .bond are helping their domains stand out, that we needed to keep introducing new options to this tech-savvy crowd. That is where .cyou (See You) comes into play,” ...

Based in Luxembourg, ShortDot SA was founded in 2017 by entrepreneurs Lars Jensen, Kevin Kopas, Michael Riedl, and Christian Tecar, who between them have 60 years of experience in the domain industry – on both the registry and registrar sides of the business. That acumen is not only driving the company’s growth but solidifying its reputation as a cutting-edge force in the domain industry.

The company is now the largest domain name registry in the world.

Largest registry in the world....Sure.

Statement would be true if they were the registry for .largestdomainname :-P ...which, thinking about it, makes as much sense as .cyou

The cited article should have pointed out that this was acquired via an ICANN approved assignment of rights from the registry (Beijing Gamease Age Digital Technology Co., Ltd.) who had owned, but not put into use, the TLD since 2015. This reassignment was approved in November.

I don't like the .cyou extension and can't see it getting significant serious use (although I would never have predicted the number of .icu registrations).

At first, the idea for the .cyou extension was to be used for a brand / identity protection; ChangYou.com

Top domain extensions like .com, net, co.uk etc are all marketable as people use them in real business, and so good investments for domain sellers.

Low level ones like top, xyz, icu, cyou etc are all profitable by the extension owner because investors and small time hobbyists buy them.

Make sure you know which group your money is being fed to (hint not the latter).

(And before someone mentions that there are huge sale prices in some low level ones, yes, and multiple times a week a number of people around the world win millions in lotteries...)

cyou and icu - both can just be used for individual projects, or a temporary place for pointing your site.
Why would serious business go and register cyou? Rather get a .COM!
