Hi All! :hi:

By request, we've decided to start a thread dedicated to Sedo. We're looking for invaluable insight into what domainers want and need out of our parking program (and marketplace, of course).

Questions, comments, suggestions, tips are welcome! We're hoping this will be a great discussion about what works at Sedo and what might not (please be constructive and respectful to others in your feedback) so that everyone involved can benefit and learn from it.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas! Happy Holidays!

Always,
Keith
(on behalf of Sedo)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

There is one solution: SEDO could allow only IDN Names belonging to the language of the Domain Name. For instance:

café.com allowed
phíshíng.com NOT allowed
Sure, if you can develop software that is able to process all existing languages and dialects, you could sell it to them.

That would be perfect,maybe.

I appreciate that currently it is difficult to monitor ALL the names that are uploaded.

However, the main problem with whatever you want to call the current plague is the featured listings and those on auction.

It takes me around 5 minutes to check over the featured listings and the names on auction to pick out the dross and I'm no expert so I would have thought any member of the Sedo compliance team could do what I do with ease. That is if they wanted to. :P

Software?
You don't need Software.
There are currently 240 Names in Auction at Sedo.

Lets make it 300 averange running auctions.
300!

They can check them manualy. Should be no problem with auctions. They can check each started auction and exclude those shady IDN names.

They don't need to check ALL domains offered at Sedo.

I am pretty sure SEDO knows exactly whats going on with these IDN names. But they don't care, as long as some of these buyers pay and therefore Sedo gets paid by the Seller.

What about endusers who just want a domain for their business and have no experience with domains? They probably don't know what all these details like IDN, etc. mean.

All these listings make Sedo look like a shady place.

There are some Domain Forums (like in Germany) who have this rule and no one can post such dubios IDN Domains for sale.

Well but its Sedo, seams like they are only interested in their comission at the moment.

Well, when you have no experience and you're buying ANYTHING, you need to do some research. But even when I knew nothing about domains, and IDN names, I read the SEDO auction and it clearly stated "This domain is actually blah blah blah". Doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

Even with the sentence: This is an IDN Domain, the technical term is.....
I bet many people who are not domainers don't understand that.

XN--P1AB7DZV.COM. currently at 850$
XN--80A6AAM01D.COM. 13 bids 270$
XN--E1ASI.COM 1000$ 2 bids
etc...

Sedo MUST know that something is wrong here. I am sure they know that some people who are bidding are not aware on what exactly they are bidding.

I am very dissapointed.

They are going to need staff that is extremely good at foreign languages and familiar with non-Latin scripts.
It's already hard enough to tell certain Latin letters from the Cyrillic alphabet. Some domains are obviously look-alikes, others will be much more difficult to assess.

Moderating the auctions is not the solution, because it means one person has already fallen for the trap.

^ not really

You need only language dictionary files and convert them to IDN.

There are words that are not in the dictionary. Not too mention multiple keywords.

there are two issues here i think:

1) idn look a like to us ascii to generate doubt. sedo has done the minimum with this respect and when you bid you should know what you are bidding.

2) the shill bidding process that is obvious in these domains+sellers. something that has been going on for years with other domains. you only need one bid to start. there has been very few things done regarding this for what it seems.

the screening process for shill bidding could easily be done manually.

the IDN warnings could be more noticeable if SEDO was interested in making the marketplace more transparent.

regards,
tonecas

And perhaps red to indicate likely shill bids?

It's not that simple, you have names that look like something else (All part of the problem) that are not in any particular language and they are set off with shill bids.

It's all well and good being blasé (real word!)when you are in the business, not so funny when you are not,and we have seen a few people caught already and no doubt there will be more unless Sedo take action.

They do not need people who are good at foreign languages/scripts. They need people who can apply common sense and a little sleuthing.I would think I could teach anybody how to do it in about 15 minutes,it's not rocket science. And Sedo would have access to more information than we do so even easier.More importantly they need the will to do it.

Not really,as most of the first bids are shill bids it is in fact another sign where common sense can apply.Again Sedo can easily check the validity of a bid.If they wanted to!

But some of us will continue to do so until perhaps there is a change in the winds direction!

You may have noticed I prefer to do something as opposed to nothing.

can someone explain something about this bid...

1. Bidder 4 seems to outbid himself?
2. I had 750 in and then Sedo automatically bids another $50?

Can someone please explain this very strange bidding line as I've used ebay from time to time and never seen people out bid themselves or an extra 50 when I'm already the leader!!!

Views would be good...

please note the lovely name sms.com rather than the IDN name i finally won :great:

If you look at the timing you will see that your 1st? bid and bidder 4's bid were the same date / same time,I am guessing your bid simply triggered bidder 4's final auto bid?

Whilst it's great you do so , it really is painful reading consider they have admitted reading this thread

My suggestion was reasonable and that's where i will leave it

Your suggestion was basically do nothing which of course will achieve nothing and it is your right to leave it there.

I have been associated with a number of businesses and ventures over my great many years and I haver never been backward in coming forward and it has stood me in reasonable stead. I will continue to go forward,at least for the time being,in the hopes that something may eventually change.

But without doubt it is a marathon and not a sprint.Maybe we will dig out somebody in the company with a conscience. :bah:

But what does really surprise me is the general lack of support/interest from fellow domainers from both the ASCII and the IDN communities. A general apathy which no doubt Sedo see as a weakness and as such will do little to improve the situation.

Or maybe I will just give up----------------------nah! :D

Just dont do your head in is all i am saying

Today I played 18 holes of golf, had lunch with the misses.

Walked my dogs, did 100 sit ups,300 on the air strider, swum in my pool.

Then made a few posts on some forums and my blogs and it's not yet 4.30pm where I am.

Retirement is great!

I think I can cope. :D
