Sarah Palin - Right move?

I think her decision to not run for re-election was premature.
I think her decision to turn over her seat was the smart thing to do.

I feel she put Alaska before herself. I think she walked away from
"politics as usual". I think this move will help her chances in 2012.

What say you?

Agreed. That way they can't pull the "well you were only governor of Alaska, and who cares about that" card again. Once she gets more experience, she might have a better shot at the presidency. Maybe 2016 or 2020...

Scandal comes to mind.

Why else would Palin resign on a slow news holiday weekend. Seems a strange time to do it.

And so far before her term ends - heck, she's only bit more than half way through it with more than a year and half remaining.

Another telling sign she likely won't make it in a Presidential election (assuming she even survives the nomination process to get there), beyond the fact she's viewed as a quitter by some / continuing questions of scandal, is when things get tough she gets going out the door. Literally - at least twice she bailed on high profile speaking engagements - google for more details.

On the other hand, some believe, if she were to find a way to muscle into some high level political position in the lower 48, that could propel her into the 2012, or more likely 2016, presidential election. Time will tell.

Personally, I think Palin is done - she'll be ever relegated to a sideshow conservative persona for writing books, cable news appearances, and delivering speeches.

Obama will be a slam dunk to be relected, when this become clear to the repubicans they might put Palin up for slaughter against Obama just so the republicans can say forever that they ran a woman for pressident.

Palin is such a joke... Listen to a speech from Obama versus one from Palin -- there must be a 50 IQ point difference between the two. I feel sorry for John McCain...

terrible move but the best one she can make

I think it was the best move for her. She's been unfairly treated like shit by the media. David Letterman was just the latest asshole to treat her like dirt. If he had thrown the same insult at Obama he would have been kicked out of CBS in less than 24 hours for being a racist. No politician can run against the media hypocrisy nowadays.

She asks for it imho: Wonkette : Insane Sarah Palin, Late At Night On July 4, Threatens To Sue Entire Internet, Via Twitter . Some of the stuff about her out there... Shocking someone wouldn't be more careful when they know everything they say and do is being watched.
Why do you put a link that is so obviously and totally anti Palin. Personally I don't think she is as smart as Obama but definately smarter than George W. But the way the US media including the link you just sent have treated her are perfect examples of total bias against her. Pity she didn't sue David Letterman. I would have done it if he were to say something like that about my daughter.

I really don't understand the whole Palin thing anyway. McCain was always criticizing Obama because he didn't have as much experience as he did, so Obama got Joe Biden, who has a much greater amount of political experience, and then what does McCain do? Get Palin. I think he only did that to secure some more votes, and that didn't even get him the presidency.

I agree with the people who think there is a scandal going on, because it seems way to early to begin a presidential campaign, and the whole "I'm getting my children out of the media spotlight" claim is really dumb. She put her pregnant daughter on the spotlight and her other children. I do think that some portions of the media (and not just the "liberal media") have been putting to much on the children (from what I have heard, I couldn't care less what is going on with her children) but who's fault is that? Obama didn't shove his daughters in the spotlight and he told the media to leave them alone, which I believe is why they were left alone. The whole Letterman thing (while what he said was offensive to a lot of people and he did the right thing by apologizing) is an example of what happens when a political leader exploits his/her children.

Though I do find myself more of a Democrat, I do have respect for some Republicans (those who don't call the opposing side socialists or communists and flip out whenever Obama does something) and the lineup of potential presidential candidates for the Republicans is slowly becoming more fragile (if the way I just worded that makes any sense) due to various scandals or just flat out stupid moves.

The right thing Palin could do right now is stay out of the political spotlight for awhile (maybe run for the senate or congress, even though I wouldn't support that) and gain some more experience and try to make herself seem a little bit more intelligent and maybe she will be a better candidate in 2016 or 2020...but definitely not 2012. And also don't put your children in the front of your political campaign. It is fine to mention them or use them as an example for something that might help children like them, but not use them for the campaign itself, whatever campaign she is going to be running in the future.

I've seen the Obama children get more exposure to the media than Palin's, but I don't see that as a problem, after all they are part of their lives. The media has been kind to Obama, Michele and their daughters calling them sweet etc. (which they are) But what I don't agree is how vicious and mean the media have been to Palin and her kids. They picked on her and exploited her weak points to the limit without a minimum of respect for her or her family.

I'm not particularly fond of politicians as I find most of them to be hypocrits, but as the years go by my dislike for the media has increased dramatically to the point where I distrust them more than politicians. The MEDIA are the problem because they are now in control. They are the ones we should be criticizing. They are the ones we should be trying to put into place. They are getting away with murder and the majority of the population hasn't seen it yet!

They picked on her and exploited her weak points to the limit without a minimum of respect for her or her family.

I haven't really seen the media attack her younger children than her oldest daughter because of the fact she was preaching abstinence when she got pregnant. Frankly, I wouldn't attack her but I certainly see why the media would do it, even though I don't like it. As I said before, the media focused more on Palin's kids because IMHO she exploited them. If she had mentioned the situation once and left it at that, she wouldn't have been criticized that much. Obama never exploited his children which is why they were not attacked.

The only real attack I have heard about on any other one of Palin's children was what Letterman said, which there have been claims that it was directed at the older one, which I could see making sense (even though still not in good taste), but the fact that she wasn't even with Palin at the time (or so I had heard) which made the "joke" look like it was directed at her other daughter. Yet again, this wasn't in good taste but it has been the only attack I have seen on the other Palin children.

And another reason why Palin should not run for president is that due to her exploiting her children, MORE attention will be focused on them during a presidential run, and if she never agreed running for vice president, none of this would have happened. She clearly was not ready.

I hope Fox News is included in that media. IMHO they would be the ones who would seem to murder people, even though I don't think they did murder anyone, nor did the other media outlets. They [Fox News] seem to be making everyone hate the mainstream media when they ARE part of the mainstream media. Fair and Balanced isn't an appropriate term for anything they do.

I really don't see how the media is in control anyway. The whole thing about the media being in control of everything just adds fuel to conspiracy theories, and that really isn't something we need right now. =/

Palin's move just may turn out to be brilliant. Her entire theme is not doing politics the usual way. Let's face the facts here for a few minutes, and think about this. She decided that she will not seek reelection in the state of Alaska for Governor. As soon as she publicly states this - and in this era of running 2+ years before the next election - she becomes a lame duck with a year and a half to go. Aside from this, whether or not she finishes out a term, she will be attacked as only being the single-term Governor of a relatively small state (administratively speaking, of course).

That attack will be there regardless. All of you folks who complain about Palin's experience, yet voted for Obama should really consider what you are saying for a few moments. I really hate to pop you upside the head with some reality here, but you folks voted in the relatively unimpressive Barack Obama who quite arguably had little legislative history to go on. Afterall, I do remember a Senator not serving out his full term, and campaigning during most of it as well...

Which brings me to the why. Sarah Palin is getting out of Alaska because she does not play politics as usual. She cannot stand it, and her approach has always been an unconventional one. Tradition has it that you serve out the term, even as you are campaigning elsewhere. In this case, she's brilliantly not doing the usual (and Obama-esque) method of putting the office on the back burner.

I believe as a further consideration, she had her family. They're dealing with lots of litigation amidst this public castigation. It's easy to see Liberals cannot stand her, so it only follows that they respond with what they consider to be "humor." I am sorry, but regardless of party affiliation, you don't joke about someone's daughter participating in what amounts to statutory rape. It's so darn funny how the left is so quick to rant about sexism, yet Sarah Palin received the most sexist treatment of any of the candidates I have seen. Others opt to make fun of her voice, because they don't like it. As a Southerner, I'll tell you that this avenue is simply low-class and exposes ones own ignorance about real life.

Sarah Palin may or may not get my vote come 2012, 2016, or 2020. However, I will give her serious consideration. The fact that she alone riles up those of the liberal persuasion so much says much about her. It brands her as a doer and not a talker or dreamer. She breaks the feminist mold.

I'd be willing to wager 1000 dollars that you won't see her running 2012.
