I do wonder about BrandBucket. I know they can choose whatever they want but they've rejected a few of my brandable LLLLL gems like peeba.com (the .net is developed). Yet they have hard-to-remember turds like chronax.com, shmitten.com, & tourala.com on their homepage. They're too silly for me to take serious any further.

Nothing is upfront: you need to have a domain accepted for any fees to incur.

please tell if you ever made an offer to them during the first contact when they asked for price or later? or they just kept going up without knowing what figure you had in mind?
