It continues to aggravate me every time domain investors are characterized as "squatters". This morning I read an interesting article about something called "The New Internet". In the article, two things caught my eye....

Businesses and individuals/communities looking to purchase a domain on The New Internet, as well as the internet domain market overall, will benefit from the security of the platform due to the authenticated nature of all users. Here's how:

  • Businesses - Since all users on The New Internet are authenticated, businesses know who are really visiting their sites, granting access to more accurate analytics about their online customers without having to worry about bots skewing results of online ads and more.
  • Individuals and Communities - In addition to enhanced site analytics, security and pricing, individuals and communities have the added benefit of unique and creative expression when choosing their domain and extension -- for example, "first name.last name" style options offer a more personal way to market yourself and group.
  • The Domain Market - Current domain owners on the "old internet" have the chance to purchase their domain name on The New Internet as well. Authenticated Reality is also addressing the issue of domain squatting by allowing the purchase of domains on The New Internet that are currently parked by squatters on the old internet.
"When we heard that The New Internet was opening domain names on the platform, we saw this as a great opportunity...

Not sure how they plan to do this, but it sounds weird. What do you think of this whole idea?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Are people really going to send in their Driver's Licenses to browse the web?

Implicitly people agree to that when they use FB and they don't seem to care.

I don't really care I tried to use a fake one first but I wanted to see how this worked so i used my real one. Note from above what I can tell so far there is no DNS setting changes needed, just download the browser signup and your in along with all of your information. The browser is sending every page i goto to thier system it looks like so they can pickup comments on every page of the internet. anyone want the pcap file (wireshark trace) let me know i can post it (geekout). I did not try to buy a domain yet but well try later maybe.

Btw, wasn't exactly the same thing tried before? Or something very similar... Don't remember the details...

Yes I remember that, it was to let you create weird domains using DNS, probably free but not widely taken up, can anyone remember/find/link it?

Making the internet safe again? It was never safe. Does seem to be a bit of a walled garden effort to trade on the fears of the less clueful internet users. I suppose that Realnames will be making a return next.

Making the internet safe again? It was never safe.

And handing out personal info makes it less safe. Not just in terms of hacking, but spamming - you already have companies like Lead Forensics that say they make it possible for you to contact anonymous visitors to your website to try to sell them stuff.

I think this is a great idea! It's like u have a secret alternative to Tor with alternative websites. . .

It would work well and b successful if they got rid of the ID requirement tho :cautious: that's the only roadblock.

but I'm envisioning it being viral if like there's this awesome website and the domain is like: "namepros.com" and like it's all mystical and mysterious because u can only get to it if u use their browser. So all the cool kids will b like: "oooo there's this cool website XD. Namepros.com!" "Oh really? Let me seeee *types in namepros.com in Firefox" "Huh? How is this cool? it's just a bunch of ppl selling, I think, squat." "No no no hahaha ! Ur not 'initiated' so u can't get to this awesome website ^_^ u have to use a seeeecret super app. Only way to get there teehee!"

^ and htat's what makes it viral :-P

People are actually sending in their identification and payment information and agreeing to let them directly link everything that they do in the browser to your id? What could go wrong?

I don't think that there's a huge market for websites that are very difficult to find/require an exclusive browser. I want everyone with money to find my site, not some secret cabal of knuckleheads.

What these guys are doing should be illegal and they should be shut down PPI information? Driver licenses? It is interesting to note that my DNS is not changed in my android phone so they are not changing the DNS in my phone so how are they doing this? Safe? they want to make it safe by handing out my driver license to each owner of a website? Crazy . and lead forensics does not work I tried that to it only tells you a reverse DNS lookup of who owns the domain and gives you the phone number of the company not of the person that is looking at your site. I guess this company could give the owner of the website your real info even your phone number to get ahold of you not just the company number like Lead Forensics so i guess i can see value in that but who wants to give up their drivers license?

Web requests being sent to their proxy webserver which handles the DNS lookup? All their browser has to have is the IP address and port of their webserver(s).

Just wow.... What a bad idea.

Imagine the sales pitch for selling domains on ones own internet lol

What happens when someone hacks into their database and gets all the info? And don't tell me that its hack proof.

You nailed it. That's exactly the problem; no system ever is hack proof...

It's an old idea, New.net had some limited success in it but the need to install an extension on your computer in order to translation their domains using their own exclusive DNS database. I see they are also pushing their own browser so that will make it easier for those who download it to see their registered sites. The New.net venture failed because of the need for installing this software/extension so these site's reach will always be limited. You can NOT send a link to one of their registered domains to anyone who does not already use them, so bye bye to the overwhelming majority of Internet users.
Here is the archive snapshot of New.net:
http://web.archive.org/web/20120210194847/https://www.new.net/
I actually was a part of a team who tried this as well in over 10 years ago, the project was called LiveRoot and we had almost finished with it and ready to roll it out, but then the main founder changed his mind and abandoned it. This brings back a lot of memories and some dreams of a new big venture... which did not see the light. There was a patent application for the project which can be seen here:
https://www.google.com/patents/US20070180056
I see now that it has been heavily cited by GoDaddy and other in their patent applications since then.
Bottom line, this has been thought of and tried but always failed, what brought it back to live now, seems to be all the talk and news about fake news, spying and other scams, so the new venture wrapped up the old idea in new clothes (purpose) to try and sell it today. Good luck to them...
Keep in mind that their domains have NOTHING to do with the wide open Internet

I don't know what domain investors have to do so that people stop using the term "squatters".

You know... They'll probably never stop using the term "squatters". Yes it's infuriating, but on the bright side, you own the name and the name callers don't! :xf.smile:

We are the stars dear fellow domain investors; remember the following quote:

"You can be the moon and still be jealous of the stars." - Gary Allan

Confusing as hell, watched a few videos. Heard about downloading some browser.

Watched this video -

more videos - https://vimeo.com/user38247927

Didn't know FB cloning was an issue and then people would need to download some browser? That hasn't worked in the past. Reminds of of late 90's/early 2000's internet.

Can't figure out the point to any of it. Download browsers and then "real-time validation via driver's license" Give up your driver's license? People generally aren't jumping thru those kind of hoops.
Failure written all over it.

Complete failure indeed... As if we don't have data mining and privacy issues looming over our heads already!

Don't know if I like this...

People can register a domain name in the system that match their existing domain.

They can also register existing domains owned by others that are parked. Chris Ciabarra, co-founder of Authenticated Reality, told Domain Name Wire that these domains can be activated on The New Internet and the buyers can resell them, splitting profits with Authenticated Reality.

Of course, having one domain name resolve to different sites depending on your browser will cause more confusion, whereas Authenticated Realityโ€™s stated goal is to bring authentication to the internet.

Sounds like some kind of get rich quick scheme or something.

Amazing... They should have just gone and registered epicfail.com instead of thenewinternet.com. It reminds of that viral youtube video that got people drilling an audio jack into their brand new iPhone 7. You know a good number of unsuspecting people will fall for it...

Right? He's basically created a new browser that you can leave comments in and be "authenticated" by and purchase fake domain names from. Worst of all, he dropped $14k on the domain TheNewInternet.com... Like c'mon bro... for real? Shaking my head the hardest I've shook it in a long time.

And... in a few days, when you start getting neck pain from shaking it so hard; you know who to go after! :xf.grin:

Imagine its successful. Original domains would get tons of free traffic. How could anyone advertise those domains? Acquisition costs are already sky high and he thinks people will motivated enough to use a special software? Hard enough to get people to go to regular sites let alone use special software, upload id's and all that jazz. Only domainers go through all that to register domains. :)

Point well made. Sadly though, somewhere in his mind, he somewhat thinks he is making the internet better.
There's a saying in Japanese that goes like this: "The nail that sticks out, gets hammered". Exactly what we have here...

Contributing to the internet means improving upon the existing technologies while keeping the basic notions intact and backward compatible. Going against the grain is definitely asking for trouble...

Right? It's so silly... someone with that much technical background should understand this already. Has he even considered email addresses? It's bad enough that you have tell your customers to go to Pets.com on a specific browser if they want to shop at the fake pets.com.., but only after you authenticate yourself and leave some comments in the useless sidebar that takes up 30% of the screen, but please don't email @Pets.com because it's not a real domain name, but instead - email us at [email protected]... like huh? What? Why? I so confuuuuused! What a waste of time, money, and code.

@Zandibot ... I'm tasking you with spearheading the delegation that's supposed to knock some sense into this nonsense... :xf.smile:
