Just follow the fundamentals of search engine optimization and learn to make your website visitor friendly.

There are many white hat on page and off page SEO techniques which are used to optimize a website.

1. On Page SEO - means you need to do every thing on your website also called on site SEO. On page SEO includes.

a. Optimize your website Title tag.
b. Optimize your website Meta tag including keywords and description.
c. Optimize your website heading(H1) tag.
d. Optimize image alt tag.
e. Content modification must have targeted keywords.

2. Off page - means you need to make all efforts apart form your website. off page SEO includes.

a. Social bookmarking.
b. Directory submission.
c. Article writing.
d. Forum posting and Blog commenting.
e. Blogging.
f. Press Release.

Do you have any good advice for wordpress theme modifications? Trying to find the best plugin isn't always the easiest thing. How would you modify the <H1> tag in a wordpress document? If you could look at my debt .tv and give me your opinions.

Build Backlinks. Lots and lots of backlinks. Not crappy ones from bad neighborhoods. Good quality ones from high pr sites.

Do link exchanges
Beg borrow or steal(not really)links (email website owners)
Do guest posts
Build web 2.0 properties -- backlink those

Then when your done all that,

Go and Do some more Backlinking.. :wave:

Note that neither the keywords nor the description meta are used for search rankings any more (keywords WAS used by Yahoo but none of the others), though a good description can help your CTR.

I agree with you on that point that Keywords are not used by the Google and recently Yahoo also announced that they not use meta keywords for ranking factor but what about Bing. Bing still use these meta keywords for the ranking, these tips are common for all the search engine. One more thing i disagree with that point that search engine not use Meta description for your website. Every search engine use Title and description to recognize your website and to rank your website. When user search fro the keywords then Google search for its database and in that the focus on the Title and description, if content has keyword in both then the results shows the website. Many times we have seen that website not have keyword in Title and not even on web page content but Google still shows the results because the keyword is present in description.

Disagree with me all you like, but search engines do NOT use the description for ranking. It IS (usually) used for the snippet, so it affects click-through. As for the keyword meta, Microsoft hasn't used the keyword meta for years. Yahoo and Ask were the lone holdouts even back then. With Bing powering Yahoo search, that may or may not leave ASK.

Best use for the keyword meta is to scrape them and see what your clueless competition thinks they're targeting .

I think that depends on your keywords. For one less competitive keyword that would be fine to use article submissions only for others something else

It actually depends on a number of things. For example, if you domain is really new I would not try to target huge key phrases with hundreds of thousands of searches each month.

You need to write unique content and start building some quality backlinks. Do this and be patient and your rankings will come.

Rank on first page is easy, rank #1 is mediocre, keeping #1 position is hard.

My experience is to choose niches that have low competition. If your niche is highly searched but has low competition you will be able to easily climb up the rankings in google.

Google offers free keyword research tools that help with this. Get a list of keywords and go from there.
