Promoting a domain name before selling?

When you buy a domain name, do you resell it instantly, or do you try to build traffic by developing a mini-site for it? It seems like the latter would get a bit tedious and labor-intensive to do for every domain name you own.

I am guessing that you resell the ok domain names and promote/develop the "big-time" names. But, I'm brand new to this, so I don't have anything other than conjecture at this point.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

To be honest it all depends on the name. Also depends on what you intend to do with the name when you buy it. For instance i buy a lot of names and literally sell them with in hours or days or buy them for atleast double the money i spent on them.

Though this may seem simple its not. It feels like a full time job sometimes. I do buy names and hold on to them though and build up my portfolio.

When i buy a name i look at potential and why i would want to buy the name. Can it turn a profit easily? Am i getting a good deal? What are the statistics on the name like? Keywords? Development plans?

It seems overwhelming, and it is. Try checking out NameNewbie.com, there you will find a wealth of information for the newbie.

IF you have any questions just ask. ;)

Great response :)

So when you choose to resell domains right off the bat, how exactly do you go about it? Do you actively seek buyers, or do you post them to auction sites like Afternic and Sedo (or both)?

It's just like in real estate. If you can find a good proerty cheap, buy it, and then turn around and sell it for a higher price, that's great.

On the other hand if you buy a "fixer-upper" and put some time/energy/money into it, you may be able to get a much larger profit.

If you build a nice site you should get the value of the domain + the value of the site and then some extra if you find the right buyer. But if you just put up a MFA or some other cheap site it may not add much value at all.

If the new buyer does not care about the site you have built, then they won't consider that very much in making their offer.

A good compromise is to find a parking service where you don't have to put too much effort into creating a nice looking parking page, and one that will let you do some promotion to get links and organic traffic to the site. Then you can be earning some money while your domain get some links and steady traffic, which should increase it's value when it's time to sell.

developing it is better than merely building traffic to it, as the term "building traffic" can connote anything from pumped up artificial traffic to type-in traffic which is very rare a newly registered domain has unless you snap it on snap.com

usually a forum is the best way to develop it, others like you will cooperatively build/develop it for you or a blog will do until a new owner with deeper pocket steps in and assumes control.

Typically when i pick up a name to flip i will do as much research and gather as much info before i even buy it. After that i will prolly list it on namepros or another auction type setting and list it with ALL the info i found. Usually doubles what i bought it for. Although sometimes you take a loss or dont even sell a name but thats what comes with the game.

Sometimes i look for end-users but i usually only do that when i know i can find one or its simply a good name.
