Many NamePros users use droplists. This is basically a list of domains that have been registered but the owner decided to not renew the domain for some reason or maybe forgot to renew the domain. You may want to take a look at
http://www.namepros.com/expired-domains/ for more information on that. The issue with registering a domain that is dropping is that more than 1 person may be after that same domain. That is when backordering comes into play. The only other method to registering a good domain in my opinion is to just try common words together and such. Sometimes all it takes is being lucky and being in the right place at the right time. You can also try making something up that may not even be in the dictionary. There are many people that would love to get their hands on a 1 word domain that is unique and brandable. At one time, someone thought of Google and Meebo. Do you think those were in the dictionary? Nope, I don't think so.
