Hey everyone,
I am hoping someone can help me before I try and contact Godaddy with this issue.

I am trying to renew a dot (COM) domain at Godaddy that had private registration. I do not want to pay the $9.99 to renew the private registration on the domain but I CANNOT remove it in the cart when I try and renew the domain. I can't select "public" in the cart to change it. Its either a bug, nice little "forced upsale" by Godaddy or some rule I do not know about where you have to continue private registration. I doubt it is the latter. Any ideas?
Thank you

You'll have to cancel your domainsbyproxy service for it in your control panel, before renewing it.

RazorNF is correct. The service must be cancelled before renewing in order to avoid the privacy renewal fee. I think I can clarify some more, though.

The privacy service is controlled by a different account which is managed at the DomainsByProxy.com (DBP) site. If you didn't use an existing DBP account when you first got your domain with privacy, a new account would have been created for you automatically. It would have a different account number than your GoDaddy.com account, but it is created using the same password. However, note that from that point forward, the passwords for the GoDaddy.com and DomainsByProxy.com accounts are independent - meaning, if you reset either of them, the other is not affected.

Here's an article from Go Daddy's support center which steps through the cancellation process - http://x.co/jNyS

Hope this helped!

You probably have to log in to your Domains By Proxy account (they sent you an email about it when you registered the domain) and in it disable/remove the privacy, then go back to GD and renew the domain without privacy.

I think if you renew before the renewal date you can choose to just not renew the privacy, but once it goes past renewal date it just auto-inserts it in your cart (until you turn it off in DBP as described).

Also auto-renewal will renew privacy, and without any discounts, beware.

Good point,

If OP wants to add privacy again later, check in the godaddy coupons thread first - I recall there being a privacy code for something like $3.99.

If you can't find your Domainsbyproxy service password, create a new GoDaddy account and push domain to this new account. This will cancel domain's private registration. Then again push domain to your first account.
