if you already own a premium, and are about to renew, can you ask for the 50% discount on the renewal now, or do they only do it when you first buy it?

I would like to know also.
I've got one I'd love to keep, but in retrospect can't justify the $500 a year.

I recently broached this subject with Jason Samose as follows:

Hi Jason,

I would be interested to know what I could expect to pay on the renewal of ****.tv the current fee is $xxx/yr.

Although this domain is not due for renewal I was wondering if there would be some sort of discount available should I renew now?

His reply:

Hi Len,

Unfortunately, I am only in a position to offer you discounts on new registrations. Please let me know if there are any additional names you are interested in.

Best,

Jason

Before I even begin development I'm going to threaten to drop it (and to be honest, I could and might, then just use a similar reg-fee name I have for the eventual site).

I'm sure eNom would prefer $250 a year for a long time (and I'd happily pay for a few years up front at reduced cost) than $0.

Although they may argue that someone else may register for the $500pa... hmm

They are obviously banking on us not taking the risk of letting it drop and someone else snatching it up. There is also the fact that whoever may pick it up will not know they can get a discount if they register for a number of years until it's too late and they are in the same situation as we are.
This really is bull***t.... I recall (pls correct me if I am wrong)when the premiums were re-launched in May07 there was no option to intially register premiums for more than 1yr.

I asked if there was a discount if (a) I bought two premiums- one the plural of the other and (b) registered multiple years up front, back when the relaunch happened and was told 'no'.
One of the domains I was looking at was $3500 (IIRC) and the other only $750. I couldn't justify the cost in the end- I really wanted the pair, but to justify the costs I would have had to focus a significant amount of my time to getting them developed (which I didn't have back last year). It was about four months later when I heard on here about asking for the discount.

Thinking about it, my eNom account(s) had previously only been used to accept pushed domains before transferring out, so perhaps they thought I was a bit cheap. Perhaps someone who used them regularly might have got more luck? (Or did?)

They are only interested in new registrations, you are correct when they launched they said no discounts for any .tv. Now that changed, and I got an email from Jason saying I can do more. I replied hope its better than pay for 2 years and then get 50 % discount on renewal because that is not a deal. He never replied no surprise they are just looking to get whatever they can get upfront IMO

Maybe if it drops & you pick it up quick, is there a potential for when it's dropped to be back at normal reg fee or will it automatically go straight to their premium list?

yeah i think it goes back tto the premium list- but knowing dm, they will take a 500.00 renewal and turn it into a 10 grand one

Yes, for sure!

So we better develope our $500/yr premium looking to profit on them or bye.

There are now many people looking at Premium drops. If the name is a decent generic or geo it never sees they light of day so to speeak - it drops and is regged straight away.

This was not the case back in October/November. The market has heated up and people (domainers; investors; end users) want those great names for an extension that has a lot of traction now.

I would not risk dropping a name and then hope to do a discounted deal with eNom/VeriSign. If the name is any good it wont be there after the drop.

Mark,
Good feedback! Quite a bit to risk in trying to negotiate a better deal in letting it drop. Agreed that the market is heating up.

Thanks,
A

Also a good point.
Letting a domain drop in the hope of re-reg'ing it with a discount may be a mistake. In fact, I'm starting to think the one I was (half-) considering doing this with would have an increased premium reg' fee post-drop.
When I think about it, to get my previously mentioned domain of $500pa at half price, I'd give serious consideration to (i.e. almost certainly would) registering 10 years at $2500 up front. Perhaps I'll try that...

Does anyone have any experience registering premium .TVs and getting the premium renewal fee permanently lowered?

The reason I asked is because there was a domain I had some interest in that was listed for $5000. Now, someone has registered the domain and it has a renewal of a mere $500.

Are you getting your premium info from ahead.tv or from the person who regged it?

Greg according to Jason Samose there are deals, Now the deal was reg two years upfront 50 % off, then he emailed saying he could do more. I told him the first one was no deal. He never replied back to the email.

I spoke to Jason on the phone last week and to me it seemed liked each deal was based on him taking the name you requested for the amount of years and then going to see "what he could do" as far as putting together the fee.

It appears the "2 year normal reg then 50% off" deal is for the most part what he is talking about it, but it also appears as you start to get up in higher priced premiums that there might be more room to negotiate...

I may be wrong but that is what I sensed...

To me this deal really only starts to make sense if you are going for $5000 and up premiums.
