As a fan of video games and Nintendo, I really do hope they change it. They have no chance of succeeding with "Wii" as their next name.

How gutted would you be if you're one of the people who's spent $X XXX's on the premium Wii names and you read this thread lol.

I don't have any wii name but I feel sorry for the np's members who got many of them if this is true :(

"Nintendo denies this possible name change." I suspect that they wont change the name back.

The chances of a change are slim to none, I don't see any need to be alarmed. The marketing response is enormous, the number of people now alerted to the new Nintendo console is huge and the name is now widely approved of, it is just the children who are amused by it.

And a new name would probably generate even more interest and coverage for the console...never say never.

I have a couple of nice WII domains as well so this kind of put me on my thoes.
Hopefully this will once again be a panic rumour.

From a gamer's point of view, Nintendo made a HUGE splash at E3 with the name Wii, so it'll pretty much stay. Especially with Nintendo falling behind Microsoft & Sony, they needed something unique & original to stand out. Wii is their solution. They have, indeed, put too much $$$ into their marketing strategy with the name Wii to drop it.

Also, it's semi-well-known that game consoles get only one code name then a final product name.

I don't know if you're much of a gamer or not, but in the gaming industry, when the same product changes names, it looses face value among gamers. FAST.

Oh boy I wonder! There are good and bad sides to this if its true... For one, if it is, there'll be some fresh new premium names available to register and resell :p

I have a feeling they will change it back.

No company can ignore this many bad comments about a name.

Had every console thats been released since I got the Sega Mega Drive when I was 5 or 6 ;)

Can't agree with what your saying. They've already changed the name once, and your trying to tell me thats had a negative effect?

Well they technically did not change the name, Revolution was as far as Nintendo was concerned the codename for the console.

As far as i'm concerned, a change of the Wii name now would kill Nintendo's chances. The customer is always right, and the majority of Nintendo customers approve of the name. The bulk of the people who dislike it will be Sony and Microsoft 'fanboys' who need something to pick at due to the Wii having much better features and much better gameplay.

I hope the don't change the name! :td:
I'm in the middle of developing my website WiiGame.co.uk
I was hoping to make some money from that!

(not trying to flame or anything here, i'm still a n00b)

That wasn't what I was saying. I've said they change from "codename" to "real name". When it was called "revolution", most people forgot or just were too lazy to type its' full name: "CODENAME:Revolution" ;)

I knew what you were saying ;)

Whether the "Revolution" name was a codename or not people associated it with the new Nintendo console. So even though Wii is the first "real name" of the console it still constitutes a name change in my opinion.

The article might be much more credible if "Mike" had a last name.

..."We have received over 200,000 e-mails with complaints about the Wii, and the console name has been commonly associated with urine. We have been the target of many jokes, and we strongly believe that it's a bad thing for the company's reputation", says Mike, who works at the marketing department of Nintendo.

Not necessarily, someone leaking this kind of info could easily loose their job, so if it is from a source inside Nintendo his name probably isn't Mike and if it is just because his surname isn't shown doesn't take away from the credability IMO.

I think it's very unlikely it will change. The name produced quite a stir... in good and bad ways, but overall it got the name out there to a lot of people very quickly. The name itself has grown on me a lot and from what I've read about E3 this year people are already getting used to it and accepting it. I think it would be a bit of a nightmare to have to re-brand the console again.

I think all the Wii domains will be safe.
