Nintendo Wii wins gaming-consoles war

A post-E3 poll organized by Famitsu, the ultimate gaming magazine in Japan revealed something no one would suspect: Nintendo Wii tops Sony Playstation 3 and XBOX 360 in customers' preferences.

The big question was, "What gaming hardware are you looking forward to the most?" The Nintendo Wii did three times better than its closest competition. Wii: 68.8%, PS3: 21%, Xbox 360: 7.2%, and NDS: 3%. As for the price of the future PS3, 88.4% said the price is too high, 10.9% said the price is appropriate and only 0.7% said the console is inexpensive. And just think that this is a poll from one of the world's richest countries and the traditional dominant market for Sony Playstation... Not to mention that the popular PlayStation Portable didn't even managed to appear in the top.

How did Wii succeed in beating its competitors? Well, it's hard to explain since the console hasn't yet made its public debut. One reason would definitely be the name. Wii was chosen, according to company officials, because it would suggest the english word "we" and would also pinpoint towards the global gaming community that Nintendo wants to build. At the beggining everyone laughed at the unusual name, but it's now Nintendo's turn to laugh since irony and smiles have brought to its future gaming console a huge pre-release popularity, almost like in"Da Vinci Code"'s case. Who would remember for example that Wii's code name was Nintendo Revolution? Now everyone is anxiously waiting for Rayman Ravinrabbit or the new adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, future titles for Wii.

Another good reason are the pre-launch trailers, which focus on a high level of fun, and deep immersion into the game, with the help of the revolutionary controller. Wii has definitely gained popularity by including different categories of population in its target market: women, small children, elder, etc.

That's quite interesting. Have Nintendo actually started a marketing campaign at all yet?

As far as i'm aware, there's nothing going on here in England...but Japan is, afterall, Nintendo's home and it's always been ahead of us as far as technology and games are concerned...

It's good news for the wii domainers anyway. Let's hope it lasts.

Nintendo traditionally always do exceptionally well in Japan and are vastly more popular there than the Xbox - both the first xbox and the 360 launch were pretty underwhelming in Japan compared to the rest of the world.

Japanese gamers in general by all accounts tend to be more impressed by innovation when it comes to gaming, which coupled with it being Nintendo's main stomping ground explains things such as what this article reports.

Definately great news for the Wii, and of course for everyone who grabbed a Wii domain
